Mount Carmel pitcher Evan Covelley said he could barely feel his arm after Monday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference finals game against Annapolis Area Christian School. The junior said he spent most of the game working off adrenaline to keep the Cougars from being eliminated against AACS, which had yet to be beaten in the double-elimination format. Covelley threw a and and kept Mount Carmel's hopes alive for its first title since 2001 with a 2-0 victory at Ripken Stadium.

The Gilman boys lacrosse team was given an improbable opening with a one-of-a-kind comeback win over Boys' Latin in Tuesday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinal. In Friday's championship game against No. 1 Calvert Hall, the No. 2 Greyhounds made the most of the opportunity. Unlike Tuesday's win, in which they scored three man-down goals in the final 1:08 of regulation to force overtime, the Greyhounds started fast Friday. And every time the Cardinals made a push, they pushed back.

Alex Porter remembers sitting in the stands at Loyola when he was just 8 years old, watching the Dons work their way to another Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference swimming championship. The camaraderie, trust and athleticism among the swimmers resonated with Porter, who wanted nothing more than to play a key role with one of the region's most dominant programs. Porter realized his goal and his record-setting performance Saturday night helped the Dons win their 18th consecutive championship with 411.50 points, ahead of McDonogh (341.

St. Paul's coach Jay Braunstein knows a B Conference team has never won the team title at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships. His wrestlers know it, too. But junior Brad Mutchnik, the defending champ at 152 pounds, said he and his teammates need to ignore the facts and aim for the heavens. "We should focus on winning the tournament anyway," said Mutchnik, whose quarterfinal victory was one of seven for St. Paul's. "If you don't aim for the top, you'll only fall shorter from your goal.

Notre Dame Prep's victory Sunday in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference swimming championship amounted to so much more than winning a title. The Blazers not only broke McDonogh's eight-year hold on the team crown and paid it back for edging them in last season's championship, but they did it in the Eagles' pool. "That means a lot," Notre Dame Prep's Kendall Krumenacker said. "We were determined to win. " The Blazers won the regular-season title last year before losing to McDonogh by just five points in the championship meet.

St. Paul's coach Jay Braunstein has not shied away from putting his wrestlers in some of the most competitive tournaments in the nation. The Crusaders have been tested at the Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament, POWERade Christmas Wrestling Tournament, Pittsburgh Central Catholic Wrestling Invitational and Cedar Cliff Duals, among others. Host St. Paul's used that experience to win the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference regular-season championship Friday night in dual meets that featured St. Mary's, Mount Carmel and St. Vincent Pallotti, the three-time defending champion.

For No. 8 Archbishop Spalding to avenge its regular-season loss to No. 13 Archbishop Curley and defend its Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference football championship, the Cavaliers would have to clean up the mistakes they made in the first meeting — and the mistakes they were making in Saturday's title game. Cavaliers penalties and a turnover contributed to Curley's touchdowns this time in what was a one-point game until the final six minutes. K.K. Smith's 6-yard touchdown run with 5:58 remaining finally sealed a 21-13 victory for the Cavaliers at Mount St. Joseph.

A tough Archbishop Curley defense limited host No. 11 Boys' Latin to one scoring drive en route to a 15-7 win in an MIAA B Conference playoff game Saturday. Curley (9-2) advances to face No. 8 Archbishop Spalding in the conference championship game this Saturday at Mount St. Joseph at 1 p.m. The Friars upset the Cavaliers, 17-7, on Oct. 8. A three-way regular-season tie between Boys' Latin, Curley and Spalding led to Spalding winning a coin flip to advance directly to the final.

The Garrison Forest field hockey team gave its school a birthday present Sunday afternoon when it gift-wrapped a 3-2 overtime win against No. 1-seed Notre Dame Prep for the IAAM A Conference championship. Brooke Adler, one of 12 sophomores on the Grizzlies, scored twice in the game, including the game-winner with 2:32 left in overtime to secure the victory. "This one is particularly sweet given this is the school's centennial year," said Garrison Forest coach Traci Davis, whose team won its third title in five years.
