A sinkhole discovered during a routine survey will be repaired starting tomorrow, according to county officials.The sinkhole is at the intersection of Medford and Avondale roads, off Route 31, in and around a drainage ditch at the side of the road.The site is not far from another sinkhole, 35 by 40 feet and 18 feet deep, that opened up without warning and swallowed a large section of Route 31 on March 31.A motorist was fatally injured when he drove into the hole in the dark.Micki Smith, deputy director of county administrative services, said the new sinkhole is not under the roadbed and poses no threat to motorists.

An early morning fire yesterday caused $250,000 damage to a historic mill in Laurel, Prince George's County fire officials said.The fire at the Avondale Mill on Avondale Road began at 6:30 a.m. It took more than 100 firefighters, hampered by a below-zero wind chill that caused icy conditions, about 45 minutes to put the fire out.The mill, located on the banks of the Patuxent River, was in use during the Civil War period. The city of Laurel, which had plans to renovate the historic building, recently appraised it at $1 million.

After deciding houses could not be sold without a model to show customers, Diversified Homes in Columbia rushed to action. By working around-the-clock for 14 days and 6 1/2 hours, a Centennial-style model house was completed in the Avondale Run community in Westminster.The typical construction time for such a house is from 90 to 120 days."The people who were interested [in the Centennial style] were ready to buy, but were waiting to see it," said Pam Young, sales manager for the development.

Jolene Sullivan, director of the Department of Citizen Services, told the county commissioners about day-care issues and her work with the contribution and aid budgetary committee.The at-risk-for-day-care committee had its first and probably last meeting in September because "everything we wanted to do required funding," she said"We first need to have an increase in dollars for child day care at the state level," she said.In addition to day-care issues, Sullivan reported on her plan to implement the contribution and aid process, which would make fiscal budget planning for certain agencies more efficient.
