Prosecutors crafting the cases against the teenagers charged with killing a 14-year-old Crofton boy will have to show a direct connection between the beating of Christopher David Jones and his fall while riding his bicycle shortly afterward, criminal defense lawyers said on Tuesday. Details that could make those links will not be in place for weeks, authorities said. The complete autopsy report probably will not be available for a month, police said. It is expected to shed light on the nature of Jones' injuries, first allegedly at the hands of his attackers, and then as he fell and hit his head when pedaling away.

The opening scene of Patricia D. Cornwell's fourth novel, "Cruel & Unusual," is memorably macabre. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Virginia's chief medical examiner, is getting ready to do an autopsy -- labeling blood tubes, donning her plastic apron and rubber gloves. What distinguishes these particular preparations is that her subject is still alive.Dr. Scarpetta is awaiting the arrival of Ronnie Joe Waddell, who is about to be put to death in the electric chair. A decade ago, Waddell murdered Robyn Naismith, a beautiful television anchorwoman; after exhausting his appeals, only a call from the governor can spare his life.

An autopsy on Terri Schiavo found that she had massive, irreversible brain damage, a Florida medical examiner's office said yesterday in a report that gave scientific support to her husband's decision to withdraw her feeding tube. But for Schiavo's parents and others, the findings didn't end the ethical or medical debate that eventually drew in Congress and the White House. Bob and Mary Schindler still say that their daughter would not have wanted her life ended and that she was not in a persistent vegetative state, their lawyer, David Gibbs III, said.
