With the departure of last year's entire starting attack, Hood senior Joey O'Hara has a prime opportunity to insert himself as a starter. And he's trying to do it on one leg. O'Hara tore the anterior cruciate ligament in one knee last summer, and it's the same ligament that he strained as a sophomore. He returned last March and finished the season tied for third on the team in goals with 11. Coach Jeremy Mattoon said he would love to slow O'Hara's return and ease him back onto the field, but this is the last year of O'Hara's eligibility.

Syracuse sophomore Mike Daniello, who spent last season with Johns Hopkins before transferring, is reportedly recovering from serious head injuries suffered last week. Daniello was involved in an incident that left him with a fractured skull and a brain contusion, according to multiple sources. The nature of the incident is still unknown. Syracuse officials confirmed that Daniello was still being hospitalized as of Sunday but had no update on his condition at that point. The younger brother of Chris, a third-team All-American who helped the Orange to national titles in 2008 and 2009, and Nick, who played defense and long-stick midfielder at Stevens Tech, Mike Daniello played for the Blue Jays in 2012, appearing in eight games with three shots and one ground ball.

With oral commitments from sophomores growing from a trickle to a deluge the past couple of years, it was only a matter of time before the first freshman commitment arrived. That time is now. According to Inside Lacrosse, the history makers are attackman Forry Smith of the Haverford School in Havertown, Pa., and Johns Hopkins, which should come as no surprise given remarks that coach Dave Pietramala made to Baltimore Sun reporter Childs Walker in a story on the sophomore trend that ran this month: "There's no question I'm talking out both sides of my mouth on this," Pietramala said.

James McCormick "Mickey" Webster Jr., an outstanding lacrosse attackman who was co-captain of the 1959 Johns Hopkins University national championship team and later became an insurance and financial planning executive, died Friday of pancreatic cancer at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson. He was 75. "Mickey was an exalted figure in the game. There are All-Americans every year who deserve it, but he was more than just an All-American, he was one of lacrosse's greats," said Bill Tanton, former longtime sports editor of The Evening Sun. "When it comes to feeding, his name is synonymous with the great Hopkins teams of the late 1950s.
