Tewaaraton Award finalist Mike Sawyer will be a game-time decision for No. 15 Loyola's road game at Georgetown Wednesday night, coach Charley Toomey confirmed Tuesday morning. The senior attackman did not play in the team's 13-7 victory over Air Force last Saturday and attempted just three shots (scoring once) in a 9-8 loss to then-unranked Duke on March 8 after suffering an unspecified injury in an 8-6 win against Bellarmine on March 2. Toomey described Sawyer, who has registered 13 goals and two assists in six games, as “day-to-day.” “Because he had an injury and was unable to play, we just felt like staying in class and staying back here was probably the right thing to do rather than take him out of class just to travel,” Toomey said of the decision of traveling to Denver without Sawyer last weekend.

In eight games this season, Towson has started junior Thomas DeNapoli and sophomore Cory Dobyns on attack. The third attackman spot has been more of a revolving door. Five players have started as the third attackman. Sophomore Justin Mabus has made the most starts (three), and senior Matt Hughes, junior Paul Danko Jr., and freshman Brian Bolewicki have each had a turn. Junior Devin Grimaldi was the latest candidate to get a shot at playing with DeNapoli and Dobyns. He finished 0-of-1 from the field, grabbed six ground balls, committed three turnovers and caused one turnover in the Tigers' 12-4 loss to No. 20 Duke on Saturday.

For years, McDaniel had the enviable comfort level of knowing that when the score was tight, the offense could turn to Gibbs Preston and then D.J. Rickels to take charge on attack. With Rickels graduating after last season, a void opened on attack. Sophomore Pat Bivons (10 goals and seven assists) and senior Pat Woglom (13, 1) have tried to fill the role, but coach Matt Hatton said the team is still looking for that go-to leader. “I don't know if it's necessary, but it's nice to have someone behind the goal or goal-line extended that wants the ball in his stick in critical situations,” he said Thursday morning.

Mark Pannenton hasn't wasted any time making an impression with the Stevenson men's lacrosse team. The sophomore attackman, who transferred from SUNY-Cortland, scored three goals - including the game-winner with 1:49 left in overtime - to propel the No. 2 Mustangs to a 12-11 decision over No. 8 Rochester Institute of Technology before an announced 418 at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills on Wednesday night. Pannenton recorded five goals and one assist in the team's season-opening 17-11 victory over Nazareth on Feb. 16. In Wednesday night's extra session, he collected a pass from junior long-stick midfielder Warren Pumphrey, settled his feet and bounced a low shot from the left wing inside the right side of the net. "Warren obviously had a great ground ball up the midfield, and he just brought the ball up, drew one slide and put it right in my stick," Pannenton said.

Washington College got what it wanted, avenging a two-game sweep last season by thumping host Goucher, 16-8, last Saturday. In the process, the Shoremen may have gotten something that could pay dividends in the future. Nine different players scored goals in the victory, and while senior attackman Bennett Cord - last season's leading scorer - registered two goals and one assist, Washington's offense was much more diversified than just one player. Among the highlights, junior midfielder Hunter Nowicki paced the team with three goals and one assist, sophomore midfielder Grant Hughes scored three times, and senior attackman Matt Lewis posted one goal and two assists.

Jeff Fountain picked an opportune time to rediscover his game. In just his second game as a starting attackman, the Lutherville native and St. Paul's graduate pumped in three goals in Georgetown's 9-8 overtime win against visiting Navy on Sunday at Multi-Sport Field in Washington. His last goal was the game winner with 2:04 left in the extra session. Fountain, a converted midfielder, said he was eager to improve on his zero-goal, one-assist performance in the Hoyas' 11-10 overtime loss to Lafayette on Feb. 16. “I had a tough week last week,” he said.
