St. Paul's coach Brooke Kuhl-McClelland on Saturday found a way to keep high-powered C. Milton Wright from running wild on offense. Simply never let the No. 2 Mustangs start running to begin with. Using a ball-control offense featuring frequent one-on-ones and very few high-risk passes, No. 7 St. Paul's took control by holding the visiting Harford County team to just one goal in a mid-game span of more than 15 minutes, getting a game-high five goals from senior Shelby Wells in a 10-9 win. "We wanted to take away their transition.

When Kyle Boncaro and Rory Averett graduated last year as Goucher's all-time leader in points (273) and goals (190) respectively, the attack's cupboard appeared to be bare. But the unit has been rebuilt and is thriving again. Junior Max Roach ranks second on the team in both goals (17) and points (25), junior Dylan Zook leads the team in assists (16), and sophomore Sam Morgan is second in assists (14) and third in points (24). Senior Zachary Fratella ranks fifth in points (19)

I've been at the finish line of several marathons and know the crowding and congestion there. The bomb blast at the Boston Marathon was gruesome ("Marylanders caught up in chaotic scene," April 16). What concerns me now, however, is that the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies will demand - and be given - more authority to intrude into our personal lives and our freedom of movement. Every time a terrorist attack occurs there has also been an attack on privacy. This time, that must not be allowed to happen.

If reader Tom Paxton were actually a lifelong animal lover, he would understand that all dogs are "potentially dangerous" ("Pit bull compromise deserved to fail," April 15). All dogs have teeth. All dogs, given their breeding and life experience, can be problematic - or wonderful. I've been a professional dog trainer for decades. Mr. Paxton says the owner of a dog that bit him treated her pit bull "like a poodle. " I've been threatened (more often than bitten, thanks to dog-smarts and good reflexes)

Less than 24 hours ago, an apparent act of terrorism marred this year's Boston Marathon. It's too early to know many of the details about this tragic event. Late last night, officials were reporting three deaths and well over 100 injuries; soon we will have a clearer sense of how many were killed and wounded. Their families, friends and co-workers will pay tribute to and then bury their loved ones. When they are ready, some of the wounded survivors and spectators will come forward to recount the horrors they experienced.

In his Sunday column, Dan Rodricks proved the correctness of Ben Carson's statement concerning the PC police ("Ben Carson's conservative views are drawn from the Bible" Mar 30). If you make a statement that is politically incorrect, you will be attacked by the liberals who will try to shut you up. Ben Carson did not make any homophobic statements. He merely said that God's word says that marriage is between a man and a woman. That is our creator's design, not man's and no man can change God's plan to suit their own desires.

I was almost tempted to admire both the irony - to say nothing of the audacity - of being accused of producing work flawed by "evidentiary problems" in a newspaper column ("Liberal media bias is beyond doubt," March 18) by a professor who cannot be bothered to produce a single scintilla of evidence to support his claim. But since it's my reputation at stake, my amusement was minimal. For the record, the work to which your guest columnist, Richard E. Vatz, refers: "What Liberal Media?

For years, McDaniel had the enviable comfort level of knowing that when the score was tight, the offense could turn to Gibbs Preston and then D.J. Rickels to take charge on attack. With Rickels graduating after last season, a void opened on attack. Sophomore Pat Bivons (10 goals and seven assists) and senior Pat Woglom (13, 1) have tried to fill the role, but coach Matt Hatton said the team is still looking for that go-to leader. “I don't know if it's necessary, but it's nice to have someone behind the goal or goal-line extended that wants the ball in his stick in critical situations,” he said Thursday morning.

The No. 1 Maryland women have a wealth of players who can finish, and Alex Aust knows how to set them up perfectly. The senior attacker has dished out 17 assists to seven different players in the last three games. In Tuesday's 17-10 win over UMBC, she set a Terps single-game record with seven assists, breaking the mark held by seven different players including herself. Terps coach Cathy Reese said Aust became especially adept at feeding from behind the cage last season when she dished out 52 assists, third on Maryland's all-time single-season chart behind Jen Adams' 60 in 2001 and 55 in 2000.
