There's nothing like a brand-new carryout restaurant to get the heart racing with excitement. Could this be the one? The place with the extra-special gyro or meatball sub? That's what I was thinking as I ventured into the Athena One Restaurant and Carry Out in Canton. Open for only two months, the Athena One is decorated with paintings of Greece with lots of pale blue and white. In a fitting East Baltimore touch, there are also two video poker machines (for amusement only, the sign reminds us)

The Inner Harbor has been a shopping mall for more than a decade; private marinas have taken over the waterfront from Key Highway to Canton; and fewer and fewer adults remember when watermelon barges from the Eastern Shore docked at Pratt Street.Sometimes it's easy to forget that Baltimore is still a working port. The tugboat Athena is a dirty little reminder.Old, tough and battered, it is the harbor equivalent of a junkyard wrecker that will not die, a floating tub of welded steel named for the Greek goddess of wisdom.

You know that hail of junk e-mails you get, promising to clean up your credit, restore your hearing or give you a little more respect around the neighborhood? Well, Linn Goldberg, who heads the Division of Health Promotion and Sports Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University, got one of those entreaties. "At the university, they throw a lot of my good stuff away and you don't know if it's junk or not. So I have to go through my junk mail every day," Goldberg said. Good thing he did, or he and the Portland-based school would have missed out on a $1 million grant from Sports Illustrated to fund programs that give high school athletes other options than alcohol, drugs, steroids and sports supplements.

Chairman A. Alfred Taubman -- fulfills Prime Retail's desire to expand internationally."In the factory outlet center business, it's the power of the brand rather than the size of the store that makes a difference, and the brands we're targeting are going global," said David G. Phillips, president of Athena/Prime Retail Europe and the former executive vice president of operations and marketing for Prime Retail.
