For nearly 15 years, Eric Milton discarded his alma mater, losing touch with the university where he spent three quality years becoming a top-level baseball prospect and eventual first-round draft pick. The State College, Pa. native played in an MLB All-Star game, pitched a no-hitter and competed in the playoffs, all while the Maryland baseball program he left behind didn't change. The Terps have only had two winning seasons since the pitcher departed in 1996, often playing in front of an empty stadium on-campus while annually crushed by far-superior Atlantic Coast Conferece opponents.

Swimming Bowman an Olympic men's assistant coach Bob Bowman , the head coach and general manager of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Maryland, was named a men's assistant coach for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. Bowman, who serves as personal coach to 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps , also was an assistant in 2004 and 2008. He was the head coach of the U.S. men's team at the 2009 and 2007 FINA world championships and has served as a world championships assistant coach four times.

Men's college basketball UMBC adds Martin as assistant coach Ray Martin has been named an assistant coach at UMBC. Martin has coached for more than three decades and comes to the Retrievers after four years as an assistant at North Carolina Central. He was an assistant at North Carolina State from 1980 to 1988 and was head coach at Long Island from 1998 to 2001. UMES: Frankie Allen Ricardo Patton and Marlon Terry were named to the Hawks' coaching staff.

John Carroll baseball coach Joe Stetka, who led the Patriots to a 15-6 record and the No. 10 ranking, has resigned his position and accepted the head coaching job at C. Milton Wright. In two seasons at John Carroll, Stetka compiled a 27-17 record. This season he took the Patriots to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Stetka replaces C. Milton Wright coach Tony Blackburn, whose team finished with a No. 12 ranking and a 17-5 mark.

Maryland football South Carolina QB Rowe signs on to play for Terps After competing in nine camps in 10 days, Caleb Rowe finally found what he was looking for Wednesday. The quarterback, from Blue Ridge High in Greer, S.C., traveled to College Park, impressed the Maryland coaching staff during camp, earned a scholarship offer and promptly committed to the Terps. "I'm really excited," Rowe said Thursday. "It's a relief knowing I'm going to Maryland. … We don't have to worry about where I'm going and who's calling.

Et cetera Bayhawks can't hold lead, lose on road to Lizards, 14-11 Third-year midfielder Ben Hunt scored four goals, but it wasn't enough as the Chesapeake Bayhawks lost to the Long Island Lizards, 14-11, on Thursday night in Hempstead, N.Y. Attackman Danny Glading totaled two goals and an assist for Chesapeake (3-2), which fell out of a tie for first place in Major League Lacrosse. Attackman Ben Rubeor and midfielder Kyle Dixon had two assists apiece for the Bayhawks, who led 5-4 after the first period.

Girls basketball New Town's Tucker sharp from field in U.S. rout of Venezuela Jannah Tucker (New Town) had 17 points in 15minutes, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in helping the United States overwhelm Venezuela, 114-32, on Wednesday and advance to the medal semifinals at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Merida, Mexico. Colleges Terps' Dipper, Schwarzmann win IWLCA positional awards Maryland junior Brittany Dipper and sophomore Katie Schwarzmann (Century) were named Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Goalie and Midfielder of the Year, respectively, on Sunday. Dipper, who had a 6.54goals-against average, is the third Terp to win national Goalie of the Year honors, joining Alexis Venechanos (2003) and Alex Kahoe (2000). Colleges Salisbury picks alum Merkel to be men's basketball coach Salisbury named 2001 graduate Josh Merkel men's basketball coach Tuesday. Merkel, who helped Randolph-Macon to a 25-5 record this past season as an assistant coach, played for the Sea Gulls from 1997 until 2001, averaging 9.3 points, 2.5rebounds and 1.8 assists. Before his stint with the Yellow Jackets, Merkel spent five seasons as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky, which won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in 2007.
