Police raided an alleged firearms 'safe house' in West Baltimore yesterday and seized seven weapons, including a handgun believed used in a recent slaying and an assault rifle stolen in November from a Parkville gun shop.Detectives forced in the front door of the rowhouse, in the 2300 block of Whittier Ave., just before 7 a.m. and were confronted by a Doberman pinscher which immediately attacked one of the officers, police said.Another officer killed the animal with a shotgun blast.Minutes later, police arrested Terrence Fenwick, 21, who lives in the house, in a third-floor bedroom.

After months of dead ends investigating last summer's double slaying at Loch Raven Reservoir, police have made a major breakthrough in the unsolved case -- recovering the assault rifle used in the crime and identifying two Baltimore brothers as suspects.The AK-47 rifle, police said yesterday, was found during a weekend raid at the Hamilton-area home of Michael and Anthony John Zenone, who have been charged in two bank robberies, and are suspects in several other robberies and burglaries since 1993.

LEONARDTOWN -- A sentencing hearing for John Frederick Thanos was set for tomorrow after he was convicted last night of the Aug. 31, 1990, robbery and murder of a young Eastern Shore welder.After just one day of testimony, St. Mary's County Circuit Court Judge Marvin S. Kaminetz last night pronounced Thanos guilty of first-degree murder, felony murder, armed robbery, a handgun violation and theft over $300.The judge, who threw out a charge of kidnapping for lack of evidence, then set tomorrow's sentencing hearing.

Alphonso Quinn, the man accused of being the "crossbow rapist," was convicted yesterday of terrorizing a Prince George's County couple in their home last summer.The jury of nine men and three women deliberated 3 1/2 hours before convicting him of first-degree rape, a first-degree sex offense, armed robbery and burglary. This was the second of four cases against him."I'm relieved that the jury did the right thing," said prosecutor Deborah Johnston.Quinn was also convicted Aug. 12 of raping and holding a Bowie woman hostage in her home last summer.

Two brothers charged as part of a regional drug ring from which federal authorities seized $8 million worth of cocaine had a "virtual arsenal" of weapons available to them, a federal prosecutor told a U.S. District Court judge yesterday. In a detention hearing before Magistrate Judge Charles B. Day, U.S. Attorney Ranganath Manthripragada talked about the combination of drugs, weapons and cash that police said they found in the homes of James and Jamerson Tillman. The brothers and a third man, Lyle Kent Wade, 47, of the 4700 block of 67th Ave. in Landover Hills were charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

A 19-year-old Western Maryland College freshman was arrested Monday after a semiautomatic assault rifle was found in his dormitory room, Westminster police said yesterday. He also was suspended from the college pending a hearing by the Honor and Conduct Board. Glenn Wynn Robinson, 19, of Peach Bottom, Pa., was arrested by city police and charged with one count of possession of a regulated firearm by a person under the age of 21, police said. He was later released on personal recognizance, police said.

Federal agents are assisting city police in trying to determine how a 17-year-old boy got the AK-47 assault rifle allegedly used Monday to kill a 13-year-old boy in a spray of gunfire at an East Baltimore apartment complex.The teen-age suspect, Marquis Dayvon Bryson, told police he had the semiautomatic weapon "for quite a while," but refused to say how he obtained it, said Sgt. Gary Childs of the city police homicide unit.Roy Cheeks, an agent with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said authorities are attempting to trace the weapon's origin by its serial number.
