A Dundalk woman who was sentenced last week to 60 years in prison in her husband's murder pleaded guilty Thursday to assaulting an officer at the Baltimore County Detention Center last August, said Deputy State's Attorney John P. Cox. Jaclyn J. Martin, 31, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor second-degree assault in an altercation with a woman officer on Aug. 21 and was sentenced to the time she has served since the charge was filed on Aug. 31. ...

An article in Monday's Howard County section of The Sun incorrectly listed the new telephone number for the Howard County Sexual Assault Center. As of March 1, the new number will be 290-6432.The Sun regrets the error.The Howard County Sexual Assault Center is moving to a new office complex that the staff members say will help them expand and improve their services.Beginning March 1, the center will be housed in the Crystal Heights Office Center at 10015 Old Columbia Road in Columbia. Staff members will remain available for counseling during the move, which will begin Feb. 21.Since the center opened 20 years ago, sharing space in the Harriet Tubman Center -- now the Grassroots Homeless Shelter in Columbia -- the full-time paid staff has grown from four workers to 12 and is overseen by a 20-member board of directors.

The Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center Inc. (SARC), a nonprofit organization in Bel Air that assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, is seeking volunteers to answer a 24-hour help line, accompany victims and provide office assistance.Volunteer training will begin next month. Jack Runyan and Armand Harris are volunteers at the Howard County Sexual Assault Center in Columbia. They may be the first men in Maryland to volunteer to victims of sexual assault, according to Sheila Begg, the center's volunteer coordinator.Runyan and Harris have taken the same training as female counselors but they do not accompany female victims to the hospital.''Upon request from a nurse or counselor we may go to the hospital to act as a backup for the spouse, friend or father of the victim,'' says Harris.

It was early one Saturday morning when Brooke Slunt got the call through the Howard County Sexual Assault Center: A 13-year-old girl reporting her uncle had raped her."He had gone to the store to buy more alcohol when she called," recalled Ms. Slunt, now the center's education and training specialist, who was a volunteer the day that call came in."Before I could get her name, she had to hang up because he came back."Ms. Slunt waited four hours for the girl to call back, "the longest four hours I have ever spent," she said.

The Howard County Sexual Assault Center has joined America's first nationwide toll-free hot line for victims of sexual assault: 1-800-656-HOPE.The number is operated by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, a Washington-based nonprofit organization.When callers dial the toll-free number, they are connected to the nearest rape crisis center.

Names can be deceiving.The Montana Logging and Ballet Company will appear Thursday at Centennial High in a benefit for the Howard County Sexual Assault Center.Little dancing and even less wood are found in their performance.They are, however, from Montana.The group is composed of four musician-satirists from western Montana. Bob Fitzgerald, Tim Holmes, Steve Garnaas-Holmes and Rusty Harper are a Methodist minister, a civilservant, a promoter and a sculptor.They say their mission is to bring a message of hope through song, satire and slapstick comedy.

Officials at the Howard County Sexual Assault Center are warning parents about teen-age girls being lured to alcohol parties and being sexually abused by several males.The warning comes after the most recent of three such incidents this year, one each in May, July and November.From 1990 to 1994, the center had recorded only two other incidents of this kind, which officials label gang rape.The most recent incident was one of five sexual assaults on girls ages 13 to 15 last month in Howard County, according to the center.

Support for Rape VictimsRape support is available 24 hours in Howard County.The Howard County Sexual Assault Center Inc. supports the Howard County Police Department and its investigations of instances of sexual assault in the county.The board of directors and I find the reporting in The Sun of the "PrimeTime Live" interview and the rape case on which it was based to be in especially poor judgment.The comments made by Kevin Thomas in "Robey gets Caught in TV Headlights" (April 16) and the editorial cartoon published the same Sunday hamper the work of the sexual assault center to provide crisis intervention, counseling and therapy to victims of sexual assault and rape.

A 21-year-old North Laurel woman was attacked and raped early yesterday as she got out of her car at an apartment complex, Howard County police said.The woman was treated at Howard County General Hospital and released yesterday. Police said she was the county's 13th rape victim this year -- a pace that indicates such crimes are still on the increase in the county.According to police, the woman had just left her car in the 9600 block of Barrel House Road in North Laurel when a man grabbed her about 3:30 a.m.Police said she struggled with the man as he tried to drag her away, but she could not get loose.

County Executive John G. Gary, in his latest privatization venture, said he will explore making the Sexual Assault Crisis Center a self-supporting, nonprofit organization.The center provides rape crisis intervention, counseling for sexual assault victims and people to accompany them to a hospital, and community education. It also provides staff for the countywide Sexual Assault & General Crisis Hot Line at 222-RAPE (7273).Mr. Gary said he hoped that privatizing the center would lead to greater community involvement.

Baltimore has a new rape counseling center, which will replace an organization that closed about six weeks ago because of financial problems.Gail Kaplan, a rape victim who is on the center's board of directors, praised the programs offered by the Sexual Assault Center, which held its grand opening at 9 W. Mulberry St. yesterday. The Northwest Baltimore woman, who was raped in her home in 1987, said the center is "a place where people share the same experiences, the same feelings, the same emotions."

A county judge ordered the Howard County Sexual Assault Center on Friday to turn over the counseling records of two patients for his review in an upcoming child abuse case.The Howard County Sexual Assault Center fought disclosure of the records of a 10- and 11-year-old patient, claiming the therapy sessions were protected under the confidentiality privilege between a therapist and patient.But Circuit Judge Cornelius F. Sybert Jr. ruled that the sessions, conducted by a counselor with a master's degree and under the supervision of a licensed psychologist, did not meet the legal definition of a psychologist's or psychiatrist's relationship with a patient.

The sexual abuse of children is a subject few people want to talk about. It has long been a social problem and, despite the fact it has been acknowledged and attacked on many fronts in recent years, it appears to be a growing moral blight upon today's society.Mary Ellen Merrick, a Hickory Ridge resident, is a psychotherapist with 20 years of experience dealing with the victims of rape, incest and sexual assault. Dr. Merrick, who has a private counseling service, IHM Consultation Services, is also a counselor with the Howard County Sexual Assault Center.
