A member of the Baltimore Fire Department training to become a rescue diver was hospitalized Thursday after ascending to the surface of a Harford County quarry too quickly during a certification class, according to department officials. The man, who has not been identified, was released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center Friday morning after being treated in its hyperbaric chamber and then being held overnight for observation, said Deputy Chief Paul Moore, director of training and education at the department's training academy.

Dusk lurked on the horizon Sunday as Ascension Episcopal took the field against Jerusalem Lutheran with the Carroll County Church League's postseason softball tournament championship on the line at Carroll Community College.Not wanting darkness to cut things short, tourney director Tom Smith checked to find out whether the lighted CarrollCounty Sports Complex could be used if Jerusalem, which had come outof the losers' bracket, beat Ascension and forced a second game between the two teams.

St. Joseph Medical Center has narrowed its search for a strategic partner to three, the hospital said Wednesday. The troubled hospital did not identify the finalists, but several sources with knowledge of the process confirmed that the potential buyers are LifeBridge Health, which owns Sinai and Northwest hospitals; Ascension Health, which owns St. Agnes Hospital; and the University of Maryland Medical System. "The St. Joseph Medical Center Board met Jan. 19 and narrowed the number of potential strategic partners to three for the next round of discussions," reads a statement from St. Joseph.

WESTMINSTER -- It was the same result when Union Bridge Church of the Brethren faced Ascension Episcopal Church twice in the Carroll County Church Softball Championships, but with a little different look each time.Union Bridge took the championship on Sunday at Carroll County Community College by defeating Ascension, 10-3, in the semifinals and, 6-3, when the two met again in the finals."Everybody chipped in and did a great job," said Brethren head coach Steve Horr. "We hung in there the whole way."

ASHBURN, Va. -- For the first nine games of the 2006 season, the quarterback meetings for the Washington Redskins were focused as much on starter Mark Brunell mastering the team's new offense as on what might be in store from opposing defenses. With a quarterback who already had played 13 seasons in the NFL, and had been through the NFC East 2 1/2 times while in Washington, there was little that quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor or the team's two other quarterbacks, Todd Collins and Jason Campbell, could offer that Brunell hadn't seen before.
