It may have been Baltimore's primary election night, but some 500 Marylanders elected to spend the evening downtown honoring one local pol who wasn't in the race. The Arthritis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award to U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski at a reception and dinner, calling her an "aggressive advocate" for health care.A Hyatt Regency ballroom was filled to the brim with folks such as chapter president Jack Whisler; event chair Brenda Crabbs; event senior chair William Donald Schaefer; event corporate chair Henry Rosenberg Jr.; Mikulski family members Chris Fajkowski, Maria Fajkowski and Fran Liszewski; Clay Perry, senior counsel for the Constellation Energy Group; the Rev. Harold Ridley, president of Loyola College of Maryland; and Joseph E. Blair Jr., board chair of Baltimore Life Cos.The Arthritis Foundation was the real winner on election night, collecting $120,000 for its war chest in the fight against arthritis.

On Friday, Feb. 1, award-winning New York chef, restaurateur and cookbook author Seamus Mullen joined mystery writer, columnist and book reviewer Jennifer Vido, of Harford County, for her 8th Annual Author Dinner for Arthritis. Vido has been living with rheumatoid arthritis since she was a child and advocates for the 1.1 million Marylanders living with arthritis. The event was sponsored by Andrew McMeel Publishing. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 2007, Mullen was determined to change the way he ate to help his body fight the RA. His cookbook, Hero Food, was released last year and focuses on foods that reduce inflammation in the body.

Seven new members have been named to the Advisory Board of the Southern Maryland Branch of the Arthritis Foundation.Annapolis residents Louise Hanson and Rebecca Enzinger were joined by former U.S. Rep. Marjorie S. Holt and Beth Patterson of Severna Park, Cedric El-Amin of Bowie, Janet Hoffritz of Edgewater, and Dr. Sarah White of Bay Area Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, with offices in Glen Burnie and Arnold.Lola Finch of Arnold was elected secretary. Mary Major of Major Changes will continue as chairwoman and Erwin Abrams of Hospice of the Chesapeake continues as vice chairman.

THE ARTHRITIS Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to their profession and community. This year's honoree, Joe Blair Jr., recently retired as president and CEO of Baltimore Life Insurance Co., though he continues as its chairman of the board.Joe certainly meets the award's criteria. He is the first chairman of the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association, a board member of the American Council of Life Insurance, chairman of the board of Visitors of the University of Baltimore and chairman of the board of the United Way of Central Maryland.

Dave Huber, a lifelong resident of Baltimore County, has the look of a regular on the Northern Central Railroad Trail in Cockeysville, another middle-aged man fighting for svelteness. But unlike many of the bicyclists, runners and walkers who frequent the one-time railroad right-of-way, Huber, 47, has never been an exercise enthusiast. In fact, until May, he hadn't run regularly since he was a teen-ager. Now, thanks to some inner resolve and outside prompting from the Joints in Motion program, a fund-raising branch of the Arthritis Foundation, Huber is training for a marathon.

The Scarboro Hills Disc Golf Club is hosting its second annual "Let's Throw Together" Doubles Disc Golf Tournament to benefit the Arthritis Foundation and the Scarboro Hills Disc Golf Club. The event is a charity doubles disc golf tournament set for April 21. Bring your own partner in best shot style of play. Both players throw from each lie (starting with the tee shot), and then the team chooses which of the resulting lies to continue play from, until the hole is completed.

The White Marsh library will celebrate its 20th year of service with activities for all ages Saturday at 8133 Sandpiper Circle. Activities will include an all-day slide show of the library's history, entertainment, face painting and snacks. At 11 a.m., there will be performances of magic, juggling and balloon tricks. At 2 p.m., there will be a presentation of yo-yo fun and safety tips in an interactive demonstration. Information: 410-887-5098.
