Fort Valley (Ga.) State coach Kent Schoolfield and Morgan State offensive coordinator Donald Hill have emerged as the finalists for the vacant Morgan head-coaching position, a source close to the selection process said yesterday. Schoolfield sounded like a man who is very interested in moving from Division II to Division I-AA. "I know the top Division I-AA schools put a lot of money into their programs," Schoolfield said. Hill hasn't tried to hide his desire to replace Stanley Mitchell, who was fired at the end of last season after posting a 2-9 record.

If there is a message Rayfield Wright would give the 1992 Black College All-Americans, it is this:Stay in school. Get your degree. Then worry about the NFL."It doesn't make any difference whether you go to a small school, a black school or a big school," Wright said last night at the Inner Harbor Marriott, where a two-night celebration of black college football began."If you don't apply yourself, if you don't go to get an education, you're going for the wrong reason."Wright is living proof it's the right thing to do.He was a talented high school basketball player in Griffin, Ga., 40 miles south of Atlanta.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins' plans to speak with Randy Shannon about their vacant coaching position were dashed yesterday when the University of Miami defensive coordinator said he didn't plan to interview. Shannon denied being contacted by the franchise despite sources saying the Dolphins planned to interview him and interim coach Jim Bates congratulating him on the chance during his news conference yesterday. LSU's Nick Saban remains the front-runner, but the Dolphins are trying to fulfill NFL rules regarding coaching vacancies as well as keeping their options open by interviewing minority candidates.
