Calling on the city's religious institutions to do the work that government cannot, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced a new faith-based initiative Thursday aimed at reconnecting congregants at Baltimore's churches, synagogues and mosques with neighborhoods and residents. The "Awaken Baltimore" initiative asks congregants to devote one Thursday or Friday of each month for the next year to engaging the communities surrounding their places of worship through volunteer work.

She didn't know him personally, but any time Sonia Moyd was "doing God's business," all she had to do was stand in front of The Ark Church and call Milton Hill's name. "Brother Milton! Brother Milton!" she'd cry if her arms were too full of groceries or other goods to distribute to the poor, and he'd come running from his next-door apartment to help. When Moyd called his name Monday night, she was in tears. She was one of 500 people from across Baltimore who filled the street in front of The Ark Church on East North Avenue to sing hymns and salute the life of Hill, a volunteer caretaker and habitual good Samaritan who was shot and killed late Thursday or early Friday.

Every morning, Seymour Murray would start his day yelling out his kitchen window to his neighbor. "Hey, old man. Make me breakfast," Murray, 55, would say. "Make it yourself," Milton Hill would yell back to Murray, who was also his cousin. But then the two would have coffee together in Murray's apartment above a florist shop in the 1500 block of E. North Ave. On Friday morning, Murray did not get a response from Hill. When Murray took his apartment's back steps to the narrow alleyway, he found Hill slumped against a fence, lying in a pool of blood.

Milton Hill shoveled the snow from the front walk of the church next to his small East Baltimore apartment. The 70-year-old helped carry heavy boxes to the food pantry and walked women to their cars after late-night events. He trimmed the church hedges on Thursday, just because it needed to be done. On Friday morning, Hill was found slumped against a fence, lying in a pool of blood. He had been shot. The scooter he used to get around town — a retirement present he bought himself, according to the church deacon — was gone.
