Archbishop Curley leads after the first night of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship wrestling tournament at Mount St. Joseph. The Friars posted 78.5 points to take the lead, followed by McDonogh with 69.5. Curley advanced 10 wrestlers to the semifinals, which tied McDonogh for the most from any school. The tournament continues today, with the semifinals getting underway at 10 a.m. The finals will begin around 2 p.m. The biggest upset of the day came at 189 pounds, where seventh-seeded Mike Lima of St. Paul's upset No. 2 Rico Ramires of Calvert Hall, 12-10, in the quarterfinals.

BOYS TRACK Performer of the Year Jamin Gallman Poly Despite battling bronchitis for much of the season, Gallman had another fine campaign. The senior got sick in the early weeks of the season and collapsed in the Baltimore City championship. But he continued to compete, doing well in the regionals and eventually taking second in the 400 at the state meet. Gallman also ran on the 1,600-meter relay team that broke a 22-year-old Class 2A record. Coach of the Year Steve Williams Poly After winning an indoor state title, the Engineers came close to taking another one outdoors.

The senior shortstop-outfielder led the Greyhounds (12-4) to a 4-1 record last week. Tilley came through offensively and defensively late in a dramatic 9-8 win over No. 14 Mount St. Joseph in the President's Cup semifinal game Saturday. He hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Greyhounds the lead and then helped end the game in the bottom of the frame when he turned a double play at shortstop. Tilley batted .436 in the five games, including two home runs, two doubles, eight RBIs, eight runs scored, two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly. Gilman also had wins over Georgetown Prep, McDonogh and St. Paul's early in the week before losing to Archbishop Spalding.

Senior Micah Powell scored a game-high three goals to power host Catonsville past Centennial, 16-8, yesterday in boys lacrosse. Matt Reymann added two goals and four assists and Ben Cohee had a goal and four assists for the Comets (8-3). Catonsville took a 10-4 lead at the half and was never threatened. Softball No. 2 Chesapeake-AA 12, Meade 0 -- Right-hander Nikki Mantheiy (6-0) threw a perfect game to earn her fourth shutout of the season for the Cougars (14-1). Mantheiy had 11 strikeouts in five innings and went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. No. 4 Hammond 6, Wilde Lake 3 -- Stephanie Speireman had 20 strikeouts as the Golden Bears (12-2)

Archbishop Curley High School, a Roman Catholic boys school in Northeast Baltimore, has received a $1 million gift from a Cockeysville businessman in what is believed to be the largest donation to a secondary school owned by the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Alan J. Gebhart, owner of a company that owns and manages commercial and residential real estate, made the gift to the school's endowment trust fund, which pays for student scholarships, faculty development, facility improvements and information technology.

Performer of the Year Gerome Jones, Digital Harbor The senior went undefeated in the shot put, setting meet records at the Woodlawn Warrior Invitational (57 feet, 2 1/4 inches), Freddie Hendricks Track Festival (54- 1/4 ), Father Judge Relays (56-6 1/4 ) and Howard County Spring Track Classic (54-7). He claimed both the shot put (54-5 1/4 ) and discus (146-11 1/2 ) at the city championships, setting records in both. After taking the shot put at the Class 1A South regional meet, Jones set a Class 1A state record when he registered a throw of 58-7 1/2 . Coaches of the Year Jeffrey Tolson and Lutalo Bakari, D. Harbor The No. 9 Rams had a postseason to remember.

BOYS Nick Bender, Archbishop Curley SPORT ICE HOCKEY STATS -- Bender, a sophomore left wing from Forest Hill, moved to the first line and got one assist in Archbishop Curley's first exhibition game, a 5-1 loss to Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association rival Gilman. Bender made the varsity last year and finished with two goals and seven assists while playing on the team's second line. SIDELINES -- Bender also plays hockey on the Baltimore Stars under-16 traveling team, which is just beginning its season.

Keith Brown -- McDonogh, sprints, hurdles -- The nationally ranked hurdler swept the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships this past winter. Matthew Centrowitz --Broadneck, distance -- Can the junior parlay his first state crown in the 1,600 this past winter into his first state title in outdoor track and field? Dominic Devaud -- Archbishop Curley, pole vault, hurdles --Although his strengths are in the pole vault and hurdles, the versatile Devaud can also compete in the jumps and relays.

266 All-purpose yards gained by Poly's John Marcus on rushes, punt returns and kickoff returns in Friday's 48-0 victory over Carver. He scored four touchdowns and had two conversions. 302 Career victories for McDonogh girls soccer coach Maurice Boylan Jr. after Tuesday's 4-0 victory over Notre Dame Prep. Boylan, who amassed some of those varsity victories at Park and Maryvale, is in his 18th season with the Eagles. 527 Rushing yards gained by Archbishop Curley in last week's 47-34 victory over St. Paul's.
