It's 10 in the morning and Tracy Campola has already been up for hours, putting the finishing touches on one of 14 racing silks that are due by the end of the week. The Arbutus resident is surprisingly calm, considering that she's up to her neck in orders and less than three days away from the state's largest horse race — the Preakness. Campola's calm demeanor and attention to detail brought her success as a jockey agent, but the long hours, constant travel to racetracks in other states, and the desire to spend time with her elderly father sent her in search of a different career.

Making what should have been a victory lap through Maryland on Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was forced to defend his conservative credentials after an aide referred to his campaign as an "Etch A Sketch" that could be shaken up and erased for the general election in November. A day after securing a resounding 12-point win in the Illinois primary, Romney spoke to a packed town hall meeting at an American Legion post in Arbutus, an event organized by former Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. But he was dogged by the aide's comment from earlier in the day, which opponents suggested underscored a lack of core principles.

The protracted battle for the Republican presidential nomination is about to thrust Maryland's GOP voters into the unusual position of having a voice in a national political contest even though they live in one of the country's most reliably blue states. With less than two weeks to go before the April 3 primary, Republican operatives in Maryland say they are scrambling to bring the presidential campaigns to the state. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be the first, arriving today — hours after winning the Illinois contest — to lead a town hall meeting at an American Legion post in Arbutus.
