Luncheon to honor former commander of Wilkens Station The Wilkens Police and Community Relations Organization invites area residents and members of the business community to the group's Nov. 16 luncheon honoring Capt. John Spiroff. Spiroff, the former commander of the Wilkens Police Station, has been reassigned to Baltimore County Police headquarters in Towson. The luncheon will provide an opportunity to recognize Spiroff for his efforts to open lines of communication and promote positive understanding of the role that law enforcement plays in the community, according to Lorna Rudnikas, the group's president.

Many of the 108 calls the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department received for medical and fire-rescue service during the period Oct. 28 through Nov. 4 were for electrical and power lines down and basements flooded due to Superstorm Sandy. Among them were the following: Wilkens Avenue, 4100 block, 7:20 a.m. Oct. 31. Crews from the Arbutus volunteer station and Halethorpe career station responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident in Arbutus. Two people with non-life-threatening injuries taken to a local hospital.

Among the 56 calls for medical and fire-rescue service the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department received in the week of Oct. 21-28 before Hurricane Sandy hit the state of Maryland were the following: Winslow Park Drive at Maiden Choice Lane, 12:48 a.m. Oct. 27. Crews from the Arbutus volunteer station and Catonsville and Halethorpe career stations responded to the report of a person in Catonsville with a breathing problem. One seriously injured person taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Lakebrook Circle, 2900 block, between Oct. 20, 10 p.m., and Oct. 21, 4:13 a.m. Front door forced open and two knives taken from kitchen and placed on two couches in living room. Clover Avenue, 3500 block, between Oct. 19, 10:30 p.m., and Oct. 20, 3 a.m. Air conditioning unit and dirt bike stolen.

Among the 74 calls for medical and fire-rescue service the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department received during the period Oct. 14-21 were the following: Greystone Road, 1200 block, 11:57 p.m. Oct. 17. Crews responded to the report of person going into cardiac arrest in Arbutus and transported a critically ill person to a local hospital. Highridge Street, 5400 block, 9:12 p.m. Oct 17. Crews responded to the report of a person having fallen in Arbutus and transported a seriously injured person to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

On Sept. 13, the Arbutus Business and Professional Association celebrated the completion of the Leeds Avenue repaving project and the beginning of the East Drive repaving project with County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, many elected officials and community leaders. I love Arbutus! It's full of hard working people, entrepreneurs and businesses. We have elected officials with their behind-the-scenes people who work tirelessly for us, and community associations who support us. We have an Ice Cream Cottage, town hall, lots of fun eateries and our very own neighborhood movie theater.
