Four judges and one lawyer have applied for the Court of Appeals seat that will become vacant July 6 when Chief Judge Robert M. Bell reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70. Housing eligibility is based on several requirements:* Applicants must live in Annapolis.* Applicants must need housing.* Applicants must be able to pay a no-interest mortgage to Arundel Habitat.* Applicants must help build the homes.* Applicants must provide personal references, proof of income and employment and have a good credit history.

The Bel Air Independence Day Committee is looking for its 2013 "Miss Bel Air Independence Day," the official hostess for the all-day festivities in Bel Air on Thursday, July 4, beginning with the flag-raising and pancake breakfast and ending with the traditional parade and fireworks. Miss Bel Air Independence Day 2013 will also compete at the 2013 Miss Maryland Pageant in Hagerstown in late June. The winner will be chosen by interview from all eligible applicants. Applicants must be young women from Harford County at least 17 years of age, and who will not turn 25 before Dec. 30, 2013.

RALEIGH, N.C. - The sweaty-palmed college interview just got a little more comfortable at Wake Forest University. Starting this month, any applicant can request a virtual interview with an admissions officer via Webcam and the Internet. It's part of the university's new admissions process that emphasizes personal interaction and no longer requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT test scores. Peter Chawaga, 17, was interviewed from the warmth of the family room in his home in Haverford, Pa. He applied to Wake Forest this fall and was among the first 30 prospective students to take part in the long-distance experiment.

You know you're the face of Establishment Baltimore when you're on the cover of the Calvert School alumni magazine, even when that face belongs to John Waters . The filmmaker, once regarded as terribly naughty, is featured on the fall issue of "Reflections," reminiscing about his days as a Calvert School elementary student, from 1952 to 1958. This is John Waters on his very best behavior, mind you, talking in the magazine piece about the importance of learning to write in general, and learning to write thank-you notes in particular.

District 30 delegates offer college scholarships Del. Michael E. Busch and Del. C. Richard D'Amato, both District 30 Democrats, are offering legislative college scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year to incoming, returning and continuing students. Applicants must be students at a college or university in Maryland. Students attending out of state schools qualify if the student's major is not offered at a Maryland school as determined by the State Scholarship Administration. To qualify, applicants must be residents of District 30, which covers the greater Annapolis area, including the Broadneck peninsula, Arnold, Galesville, Mayo, Shady Side, West River, Edgewater and Harwood.

The ad seeking applicants for the Howard council administrator's job said it pays $55,918 and up, depending upon experience.That was enough to draw 224 applicants from across the state and from as far as Florida, Alabama, Georgia and West Virginia to fill the vacancy left by the firing of former administrator Sheila Tolliver last month.The level of applications is 43 percent higher than in January 1993, the last time the council had to fill the position.At that time, a former state senator and an employee of the U.S. Supreme Court were among the 157 applicants for what was then the position of council "executive secretary."

All applicants must complete the online form at annapolisopera.org under auditions and vocal competition, and submit a CD. The deadline is Friday.
