Is Anthony Mason the missing piece that will put the Milwaukee Bucks into this season's NBA Finals, or just the kind of distraction a team of already fragile personalities doesn't need? Don't look at Milwaukee's 5-1 record going into last night's game against Utah as an indication of what Mason gives the Bucks. Look at the box score from Wednesday's victory over the Washington Wizards, and listen to what Mason said afterward. In 36 minutes, Mason didn't attempt a single shot. In fact, the only shot he took came after the game in the team's dressing room.

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks' offensive woes continued to mount yesterday when they learned that Hubert Davis, their best pure perimeter shooter other than Patrick Ewing, will be sidelined six weeks with a fractured right hand.Davis apparently suffered the injury, described by the team physician, Dr. Norman Scott, as a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal (one of the long bones that runs from the wrist to a finger), late in the fourth quarter of the Knicks' 84-75 victory over the Atlanta Hawks last Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Charlotte Hornets Records: 76ers, 49-33; Hornets, 49-33. Outlook: After finishing strong in the lockout-shortened season last year, the Hornets showed they were no flukes. In midseason, F Bobby Phills died in a car accident. Then Anthony Mason was arrested as the result of a nightclub altercation. The Hornets overcame all of that. They won 13 of their last 15 games, ending the season with seven straight wins and snatching the home-court advantage in the first round from the Sixers.

CHARLOTTE -- It was clear that Chris Webber was agitated. But on this night, after the Washington Bullets lost a heartbreaking 99-97 game to the Charlotte Hornets, Webber did not want to say anything about questionable calls late in the game. Or anything about officials. Especially the officials. While Webber wouldn't say it, several team sources last night said official Jim Clark told Webber during the game that he was going to get him back "for showing me up in a game two weeks ago."Whether the retaliation theory is true or not (Clark worked the Bullets' win over Dallas at Baltimore Arena two weeks ago)

LANDOVER -- Earlier in the week, Chris Webber was enjoying what was clearly the best game of his career, recording a triple double before a national television audience. But last night, the inevitable nearly caught up with the Washington Bullets power forward. After dislocating his left shoulder during the preseason for the second time in less than a year, Webber was warned by doctors that the chances of it happening again were great unless he underwent season-ending surgery. In last night's 127-120 overtime win over the New York Knicks, Webber was assisted from the floor in overtime with what was initially described as a strained left shoulder.
