The battle for the Anne Arundel County baseball championship will likely come down to the final week of the regular season. On Wednesday, 10th-ranked North County made sure that it stayed in the thick of the race with a 5-1 victory over No. 6 Broadneck. The host Knights, who ran their winning streak to three games, got a complete-game performance from senior pitcher Gregg Hauck and timely hitting to beat the visiting Bruins. In just his second start of the season, Hauck scattered four hits and struck out seven.

All lanes are closed on MD 177 in both directions in Anne Arundel County at 9:11 a.m. on Tuesday due to what the state Department of Transportation said is police activity. No additional information was given. In Baltimore City, a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 North past the US 1 Caton Avenue exit has closed one of four northbound traffic lanes and one of two northbound traffic shoulders at 9:06 a.m., DOT said. Three incidents on Baltimore-area highways, including a three-vehicle collision in Anne Arundel County that closed all westbound lanes on MD 100 at 8:33 a.m., disrupted Monday morning's rush hour, according to the state Department of Transportation. The collision in Anne Arundel County occurred on MD 100 West at Harmans Road, DOT said. In Baltimore City, a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 South at the 55.7 mile marker (toll plaza) has closed one of 12 southbound toll lanes at 8:32 a.m., DOT said.

Maryland Republican Party interim chairman Diana Waterman fended off challenges and won election as head of the state GOP this past weekend, taking the reins as the party faces a shortened fundraising session for state lawmakers and challenges from newly redrawn election districts. Waterman had been interim chair since February, when the previous chairman, former state Sen. Alex X. Mooney, announced his plans to resign. Waterman, of Queen Anne's County, won a majority of votes on the second ballot at the party's spring convention, beating Collins Bailey, popular with the Tea Party and a member of the Charles County Central Committee, and Greg Kline, an Anne Arundel County attorney and blogger.

When Howard County's transportation chief looks at a flow chart of mass transit service in the suburbs south of Baltimore, he sees a tangle of "spaghetti mesh" that ill serves the region's workers, senior citizens and handicapped. John Powell Jr. hopes to bring order to that chaos next year by uniting Howard and Anne Arundel County bus services under a single entity that would eventually morph into the state's first regional transit authority. Annapolis and Laurel officials are considering joining the effort.
