Just before a home-and-home series against the Miami Heat last month, the New Jersey Nets were talking about winning the Atlantic Division. And actually believed it. But the Nets went on to lose those two games and went on a nose-dive that, if the NBA season had ended on Thursday, would have left the team out of the playoffs. The surprise team in the NBA the first half of the season, the Nets have started to resemble, well, the Nets. New Jersey had dropped seven straight games, the longest current losing streak in the league, before last night's 108-93 victory over lowly Dallas.

It's been a dismal first half of the season for the Washington Bullets, who enter the All-Star break coming off Thursday's loss to the lowly Dallas Mavericks. All of the Washington players will get a break from basketball this weekend, with the exception of one.Guard Calbert Cheaney, the sixth pick in last year's NBA draft, will be one of 16 players participating in tonight's debut Rookie All-Star Game, to be played at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Cheaney, 6-foot-7 and out of Indiana, moved into Washington's starting lineup with the injury last month to Rex Chapman.

Opponent: Orlando MagicSite: Orlando Arena, Orlando, Fla.TV/Radio: WBDC (Ch. 50)/WWRC (980 AM)Outlook: The start of the 1996-97 season will likely see both teams without key players. The Bullets placed C Gheorghe Muresan (hip flexor) on the injured list yesterday, while the Magic may be without G Anfernee Hardaway (tendinitis, left knee). Bullets backup C Lorenzo Williams (sore knee) did not travel, leaving Chris Webber as the likely starting center. Both teams enter the season having undergone tremendous change.

CenterHakeem Olajuwon vs. Shaquille O'Neal: On paper, this is one of the best center matchups in the NBA Finals in recent memory. Olajuwon has an array of moves that grounded league MVP David Robinson in the Western Conference finals. Doing the same against O'Neal will prove be tougher. The key for O'Neal will be to keep out of foul trouble. SAN ANTONIO -- Who would have thought that Michael Jordan could stand on center court of an All-Star Game and be booed? That Jordan could be considered somehow undeserving basketball acclaim? It wasn't the kind of reaction that Jordan could have imagined receiving in making his first All-Star appearance in three years. But then again, Jordan didn't figure on winning the Most Valuable Player award either after sitting out the final 16 minutes last night as the East easily beat the West, 129-118, at the Alamodome.

When Orlando Magic coach Brian Hill was asked in October who is the best player in the NBA, he could have walked the company line and mentioned either of his two stars -- Shaquille O'Neal or Anfernee Hardaway -- and gotten few arguments. But he knew better."I think Hakeem Olajuwon has earned the respect of being the best player in the NBA," Hill said, referring to the Houston Rockets center's two straight NBA titles. "But you have to put an asterisk next to that because of a guy named Michael Jordan."
