The precise finish from McDonogh soccer star Bridgette Andrzejewski - a heavy shot from 30 yards aimed inside the upper corner - was a welcome sight for coach Harry Canellakis. That it happened during a pickup game in the middle of the summer, with nothing on the line, didn't matter. The No. 1 Eagles graduated a number of standouts from last year's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship team, but Andrzejewski's wicked strike - her first touch in the friendly session - was a comforting reminder of what Canellakis has returning this season.

McDonogh soccer standout Bridgette Andrzejewski, a rising junior and two-time All-Metro first-team forward, has made an oral commitment to play at North Carolina. Last season, Andrzejewski finished with 29 goals and 10 assists to help lead the No. 1 Eagles (14-2-2) to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title. In her two seasons on varsity, she has compiled 44 goals and 18 assists. "I'm really excited. Coach Anson [Dorrance] and the staff were great," Andrzejewski said. "They told me they would help me become the best player I could become and knowing the success they've had in the past, I trust that they will help me reach my full potential.

"Some days, I go out there and pitch great," said Joe Andrzejewski, relaxing in the clubhouse at Ainsworth Stadium in Erie, Pa. He sounded upbeat, but the tone was deceiving."Other days, I go up there and I'll constantly be behind the hitters, and they won't really hit me hard. I'll just walk a lot of people. I commit suicide out there."A 1988 graduate of Chesapeake High, Andrzejewski is fighting for his professional baseball life in the lower depths of the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system.

Twenty minutes after McDonogh's girls soccer team had beaten Institute of Notre Dame, 5-1, Ali Andrzejewski was back on the Herring Run field volleying balls out of the air off tosses from her dad. Two goals and an assist were not enough for the All-Metro striker. "I didn't do much running in that game, and I didn't get many touches on the ball," the Eagles junior said. "Even after practice, if I feel I haven't had enough touches -- no matter how good the practice was -- I'm going to come home and do whatever I didn't do in practice.

Just seven games into her high school career, the freshman forward has made a major impact for the No. 1 Eagles. In two wins against Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference rivals last week, she came through with some of her finest work to date. In a 3-1 win over No. 12 Mercy last Wednesday, Andrzejewski broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half and then iced the game with an assist. On Friday, the Eagles (6-1) knocked off then-No. 5 and previosuly unbeaten Notre Dame Prep, 7-0, with Andrzejewski accounting for the game's opening goal and two others in the win. Strong on the ball with high skills and a cannon shot, Andrzejewski has 12 goals and three assists on the season.

Former Dunbar standout Dante Blanton-Holcombe has been spectacular for the Lincoln University men's basketball team this season. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard averaged 23.6 points for the Lions, who struggled to a 4-22 season in the transition from NCAA Division III to Division II. His scoring average would have placed him second in the nation in Division II if the Lions had been eligible for scoring honors. The Pennsylvania school has applied for membership next season in the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Boyd Pfeiffer and I recently fished a section of the tidal Potomac in the vicinity of Smallwood State Park, on Mattawoman Creek, with bass guide Andy Andrzejewski of Reel Bass Adventures. It was a day to tuck away as a lifetime memory. We met Andrzejewski at the park's excellent boat-launching facility and were making our way across the main stem of the Potomac by 7 a.m."There are some humps all across this section of the river, but it's too windy and rough to fish them now. Maybe in a couple of hours it will die down and we'll try again," Andrzejewski said.
