When the No. 1 Northwestern women hit the road this weekend for games at North Carolina on Friday and Vanderbilt on Sunday, the Wildcats won't just be aiming to hold onto the No. 1 ranking. They could give coach Kelly Amonte Hiller her 200th career win. Amonte Hiller, in just her 12thseason, is 198-30. Her seven-time national champion Wildcats have averaged 18 wins since she took over the rejuvenated program in 2002. They were 5-10 their first season, 8-8 the following year and 15-3 in 2004.

Kelly Amonte knows what it feels like to be a marked woman. As one of the nation's highest-scoring collegiate women's lacrosse players, the Maryland junior draws a lot of defensive attention. But she can handle it.Ever since Amonte scored more than 300 goals in high school, she has faced every defensive strategy the opposition could muster. That hasn't stopped her from living up to her advance billing."She never played like a freshman," said Maryland coach Cindy Timchal, who recruited Amonte out of Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass.

Kelly Amonte Hiller's ability to change direction quickly enough to slip defenders behind the crease led to two quick goals to spark a 13-5 victory for the United States over England on opening night of the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations World Cup at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility at the Naval Academy. Amonte Hiller, a World Cup veteran and former Maryland All-American, finished with three goals and an assist last night - all in a 7-0 opening run. A two-time national Player of the Year at Maryland, she has played for the U.S. team in the past two World Cups and is gearing up for another in June. It seems appropriate that she has brought that same approach to coaching Northwestern, which has reached the NCAA Division I final four in just four years. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats (19-0)

With a lacrosse stick in her hand, Maryland's Jen Adams makes every move seem effortless. Even her most spectacular moves seem to flow with ease - and there are a lot of those eye-popping tricks these days. No one knows what the All-America junior attacker will do next."I've been playing with her for three years and I'm still stunned by half the stuff she does," said teammate Tonia Porras, an All-America defender who vies with Adams every day in practice. Adams is so comfortable with a lacrosse stick that she can do almost anything with it. She sees the tiniest openings and excels at slipping the ball through them.
