President Obama no longer has to worry about re-election, so now he is free to pursue his so-called "comprehensive immigration reform" - in other words, amnesty for illegal immigrants ("Granting legal status for undocumented immigrants will increase competition in workforce," Jan. 29). Congress must stop any proposal by this administration to give amnesty to illegal immigrants. It must not ignore the plight of the American worker, and we should beware of the administration's lame excuses for rewarding illegal immigrants with American jobs.

Time for a brutal assessment regarding the state of immigration reform in America. Extreme partisans on both sides of the aisle - you will not like what you read over the next two minutes. Hopefully, the rest of you will chew on it for a bit. First, the GOP. The upside here is that a majority of Republicans seem to have at least some appreciation for the rule of law. In the context of immigration reform, this instinct plays out in a desire to enforce the law - just like every other civilized country in the world, especially Mexico.

We must secure our borders now before it is to late. Our country is in great peril, and if the Democrats and the current administration get their way we will be in big trouble. Dangerous criminals, drug traffickers and human traffickers will come freely through our borders. Our current administration cannot be trusted as it shows no intentions of securing our borders. Any amnesty plan for illegal immigrants will only present a clear and present danger to our national security. The push for amnesty for undocumented immigrants must be stopped now. We will be paying more and more taxes for illegal immigrants that should have been deported to the countries they came from.

FREEING six editors from prison would be a positive result of the amnesty enacted by Turkey's parliament Thursday. They include a prominent Kurdish editor, Ocak Isik Yurtcu. This would reduce the journalists imprisoned for journalism in that NATO country to 72, as counted by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. It is a pay-off for a visit by leaders of the committee in July.Since Turkey is in many other respects a mature democracy, this continuing imprisonment of many more editors, writers and broadcasters than any other country holds is a continuing outrage.

Amnesty for fans who jump on the field and run around like maniacs at Oriole Park at Camden Yards appears to be over.  Like a Caped Crusader vanishing into the night, Mark Harvey - the guy who ran onto the field on Opening Day in a cape and Batman underwear - escaped criminal charges for his stunt due to a "miscommunication" by prosecutors. And while the State's Attorney's Office still had the ability to charge him after the fact, they opted not to while simultaneously vowing to prosecute others in the future.  So was it an empty threat?

Nothing is more common than political "solutions" to immediate problems that create much bigger problems down the road. The current immigration bill in the Senate is a classic example. The big talking point of those who want to legalize the illegal immigrants currently in the United States is to say that it is "unrealistic" to round up and deport 12 million people. Back in 1986, it was "unrealistic" to round up and deport the 3 million illegal immigrants in the United States then. So they were given amnesty - honestly labeled, back then - which is precisely why there are now 12 million illegal immigrants.

It's official: Baltimore is now America's "amnesty city. " President Barack Obama and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake have teamed up to violate the law and bypass Congress by imposing executive amnesty with troubling consequences for the citizens of Charm City. There is no question that this policy is designed to gut the Secure Communities Act as well as other federal enforcement policies designed to keep citizens safe. This past summer, President Obama issued an executive order that limits the enforcement of federal immigration law. The Obama edict mandates that law enforcement officials at the federal level only arrest, detain and deport illegal aliens classified as criminals.

Parents who have fallen behind on child support and would like to work out payments without fear of arrest can take advantage of a two-week amnesty program, starting tomorrow, offered by the Anne Arundel County Office of Child Support Enforcement. The amnesty is open to people who have an outstanding warrant connected to a failure to pay support, are about to have a driver's license suspended for nonsupport or have fallen behind in payments, said Pat Feeney, director of the child-support office.

Some of your letter writers, such as the one busting on liberals for opposing the outsourcing of jobs while welcoming immigrant laborers, must have just woken up from a 20-year snooze like Rip Wan Winkle's ( "Illegal immigrants steal American jobs," Jan. 3). Employers want their employees as cheap and as docile as possible, whether it is in Baltimore's Lower Park Heights or Bhopal, India. To try to stop this is an ineffectual as King Canute trying to stop the sea. If being a liberal means thinking of the welfare of the exploited, I'll be glad to wear that sobriquet.

One would assume that Thomas F. Schaller read all 1,100 pages of the immigration reform bill and all its amendments before he claimed that it represented the national interest ("Immigration reform would be a win for Obama and the country," June 26). He briefly mentioned that women should get "priority treatment" which could be akin to affirmative action, in my opinion. His comments about improving the lives of working class Americans may not be realistic. How can we gain improvement of the large numbers of poorly educated and unemployed black Americans by replacing them with poorly educated individuals who have minimal skills and frequently do not speak English?

Congressional leaders have done very little in the past 70 years to prevent illegal entrance via the United States' southern border. The rationale is fairly simple: Documented or undocumented individuals provide cheap labor for businesses both large and small. The Reagan administration's amnesty plan failed mainly because of the open border that allows easy access to anyone who was willing to work for minimum wages. Perhaps one of the biggest legislative mistakes was to give citizenship to any child born in the United States, whether or not a parent was a citizen.

I'm old enough to remember the 1986 amnesty for undocumented immigrants ("Citizen status is seen for millions," Jan. 28). I recall it was guaranteed never to happen again and the matter was settled. Now, nearly three decades later, we're back at square one. Millions apparently will be pardoned and soon wending their way to citizenship. I was surprised by Vice President Joe Biden's recent comment at this month's congressional swearing in ceremony. He stated that the Latinos "are the center of the future of this nation.
