Many women of child-bearing years feel pain in their pelvic area and don't know what it is. It gets worse as the day goes on, and with each pregnancy. Their doctors also sometimes can't determine the cause. Dr. Kelvin Hong, an assistant professor of radiology and surgery at the Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine, said it could be pelvic congestion syndrome. And it could get worse over time. Question: What is pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS)? Answer: According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, pelvic congestion syndrome is one of the recognized causes of chronic pelvic pain.

Within a week of arriving on campus this semester, University of Maryland junior Grace Freund felt the familiar symptoms of a depression creeping up - ones she knew to address quickly, lest they slip from her control. The 21-year-old psychology major called the counseling center on the College Park campus soon after to set up an appointment. However, she said, her request was rebuffed. "They said, 'Call back next week. We can't even schedule an intake appointment today,'" said Freund, a graduate of Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City.

It sounds like some medieval baby-killer that must have disappeared when husbands first began boiling water as their wives went into labor. But 25 percent of pregnant women in the United States carry a common, potentially deadly bacterium called group B streptococcus (or GBS) that can infect their babies during childbirth or soon after. Although doctors frequently administer antibiotics during labor to prevent them, GBS infections kill or injure several thousand babies each year - within hours or weeks of their birth.

The drivers whizzing along Redwood Street through the heart of the city's old business district, which was once lined with brokerage houses, banks, the stock exchange and the old Merchants Club, probably have no idea for whom it is named. Late last year, James Carl Nelson's book "Five Lieutenants," which told the story of five Harvard men who fought on the Western Front during World War I, was published. One of those men was George Buchanan Redwood, a newspaperman and editor who worked for the Baltimore News and was a member of the Harvard Class of 1910.

VATICAN CITY - John Paul Sonnen brought an American flag to St. Peter's Square last week to celebrate the election of Pope Benedict XVI, a banner that the 26-year-old theology student from St. Paul, Minn., waved back and forth to show the new pontiff that many Americans were "supportive of the church." But he might have saved his effort, for the dearth of U.S. flags here the past three weeks - and of flags from any Western nations - was indicative of an issue that has affected the church worldwide and altered the Vatican's course.
