Up to two lanes of southbound York Road just north of Cold Spring Lane will be closed today and tomorrow so work crews can repair a broken 36-inch water main. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, the lane closest to the curb will be closed. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow, city transportation officials say, they will close an additional lane to accommodate construction equipment. Southbound motorists will use the center turn lane to get past Cold Spring Lane, and vehicles heading north and south will be prohibited from turning left onto either direction of Cold Spring Lane.

The State Highway Administration is widening the Baltimore-Washington Parkway from two lanes to three in each direction between the Baltimore Beltway and Interstate 195, the agency said yesterday. The $12.4 million project will involve lane closings at night and on weekends. Work will not be scheduled during public events in Baltimore such as Orioles and Ravens games. The expansion of the 11/2-mile stretch of highway, also known as Maryland 295, is expected to be completed in fall 2011.

A section of Pratt Street in downtown Baltimore will be closed to traffic overnight Sunday as crews construct Baltimore Grand Prix retainer walls, the Department of Transportation said. The road will be closed between Paca and Howard streets starting at 7 p.m. Sunday and will be reopened at 5 a.m. Monday, the department said. Vehicles will be routed around the closed section, the department said. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes in the city. The Grand Prix is scheduled from Aug. 31 to Sept.

Road construction will force the closure of parts of northbound and southbound Interstate 97 between Route 3 (New Cut Road) and the Baltimore Beltway through Sunday.The construction will take place along I-97 in the vicinity of the Wellham Avenue bridge, about one-half mile north of Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard. Work will run from 8 p.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow and continue from 8 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.The closures are necessary to ensure safety during the installation of structural steel for the new Wellham Avenue bridge.

By the end of this decade, traffic engineers envision highway where your --board computer lets you know instantly of accidents, lengthy backups and the best alternate routes. Sound like wishful science fiction? Not judging from steps taken recently in Maryland and New York to bring high-technology applications to roadways.Last month, Maryland officials approved a $2 million plan for a traffic management center near BWI Airport that will monitor cameras along highways and sensors implanted in the roadbeds to spot accidents, vehicle breakdowns and heavy traffic.

The repaving work that has been bedeviling downtown commuters who regularly use Light Street is expected to drag on longer than previously announced. Kathy Chopper, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Transportation, said the multiple lane closings that have squeezed northbound Light Street to two lanes will likely continue through mid-October. Construction work on southbound Light at Pratt Street, which is expected to shift to the center lanes Wednesday at 5:30 a.m., is expected to take another two weeks, Chopper said.

Prepare to be really annoyed.For the 20,000 drivers a day who use Route 30 through Hampstead, the long drive will be longer than usual most of this week.Route 30 will be shut down at the northern rail crossing from 9 a.m. tomorrow until 3 p.m. Friday, according to the State Highway Administration.CSX Transportation will install a new rubberized crossing that should provide a smoother surface for vehicle traffic.It also will have a longer life than the current crossing."Hopefully, Monday will be the worst day," said Hampstead Police Chief Ken Russell, who said he thinks people will find alternate routes after one miserable rush hour.

Maryland State Police, Annapolis police and the Naval Academy Athletic Association are warning motorists traveling to Annapolis on Saturday to take alternate routes into the city to avoid traffic from the Navy-Air Force football game and the annual Sailboat Show at City Dock.The football game starts at 1:30 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
