Destinee Alicia Parker died of swine flu at the University of Maryland Medical Center on Tuesday, and the next day, the 14-year-old's father went back to the hospital. James Parker wasn't there to tie up loose ends, and he wasn't there to identify his daughter's body, mourners at the girl's funeral learned Saturday. "Mr. Parker went to the hospital [Wednesday] and then he went to the hospital on Thursday because there were more sick babies in the hospital, and until they all get better, the fight is not over," said Camille Bell, principal of Montebello Elementary/Middle School.

The 6-foot-tall Seelaus excels in the classroom and is headed to Yale University in the fall. Her tireless work on the basketball court has also made her one of the Baltimore area's top forwards, as she showed with 13 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and three blocks in a recent win over Centennial. Seelaus talks about her role in the Hawks' potent frontcourt, as well as her future plans, which might include becoming a doctor.

In football, they call it icing the kicker. It's the old coaching dodge of calling a timeout just before a kicker has to make a crucial field goal. The idea is to turn something that should come natural and be a replay of so many practice runs into an uncomfortable thought process that can cause the slightest hesitation. And hesitation can mean disaster. On occasion, thinking can be an athlete's worst enemy. Yogi Berra knew that. "How can you hit and think at the same time?" was the comically framed rhetorical question commonly attributed to the legendary Yankee catcher.

Alicia Keys has aspirations of being a rock star, belting over screaming guitars. She also sees herself as a jazz chanteuse, elegantly dressed while scat-singing and improvising melodies on her beloved piano. Then she wants to do more acting -- some drama, maybe comedy -- and establish more charitable efforts. The list of things she wants to accomplish goes on and on. But it's not as if the pop superstar with the seductive, camera-ready face hasn't done a lot already. At 27, with a career that's barely a decade old, she owns 11 Grammys and four multiplatinum albums.

Slam By Nick Hornby Putnam / 310 pages / $19.99 The British author Nick Hornby has made a booming career out of masculinity and its discontents. He writes smart, witty novels that make ideal fodder for box-office smashes. His essential talent is the ability to write about guy stuff - sports, music geekdom, the pursuit of women - without making anyone feel like a sucker in the process. That streak, I'm afraid, has come to an end. Slam, his new young-adult novel, is told by a 16-year-old kid named Sam, who knocks up his then-girlfriend Alicia and becomes a dad. There are a few sublime moments in the book, where Hornby nails the fumbling anguish of his hero.
