Inside Westminster Abbey, eight 20-foot-tall live trees lined the center aisle during the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. The trees transformed the space, doing what even the most elaborate floral arrangement could not — providing a natural, living sense of permanence and an air of drama. The move was unexpected, unpretentious and bold. A potted tree on your patio or deck can have the same effect. While not every tree is well-suited for a container, there are a surprising number of options, ranging from crape myrtles to hollies.

Alberta B. Gamble, a homemaker and artist, died March 19 from complications of a stroke at Roland Park Place. She was 83. Alberta Bergh, the daughter of a chemist and a professor of music, was born in Grand Rapids, Minn., and raised in Coral Gables, Fla. She was a 1947 graduate of the University of Miami, where she earned a degree in both music and zoology. Mrs. Gamble did postgraduate work at the Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Institute College of Art. She was married in 1947 to Dr. James Lawder Gamble Jr., who had been a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and died in 2002.

On Wednesday, April 7, 2004, ALBERTA PALMER, mother of Karolyn Hall, Linton Hicks, Ronald Hall and Philip Hicks, cherished grandmother of five grandchildren. Also survived by many friends. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 11 A. M at the Baltimore First Seventh Day Adventist Church, Ellicott City.

This much seems unavoidable: The Alberta clipper steaming across the Plains will bring the mid-Atlantic states more snow on Monday and Tuesday. What remains unclear is just how much to expect from the fourth winter storm of the month. For the weather-weary, the good news is that Maryland was spared more snow and misery from the Dixie snowstorm that has been delighting children and tangling traffic across the Deep South in the past day or two. That storm continued due east, not making the familiar left turn up the coast that brings snow or wintry mixes to Maryland.
