The following area servicemen recently completed basic military training:* Marine Seaman Recruit Melanio A. Rivera, son of Raymond A.And Bernadita A. Rivera of Odenton, completed training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.He is a 1990 graduate of Arundel High School.* Air National Guard Airman Kevin M. Long, son of Joseph M. Long of Haverhill, Mass. and Mary E. Long of Annapolis, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.* Pvt. Antoin T. Johnson, son of Barbara A. Joyce of Annapolis, completed training at Fort Knox, Ky.He is a 1990 graduate of Annapolis Senior High School.

Airman Jackson was a mess hall cook. Oh, he could load, ai and fire a carbine. And if he was sober, he might even have hit someone. But that wasn't really what he was trained to do.Nevertheless, he had to pull night guard duty like everyone else. And like everyone else, he hated it. Especially since the Korean War had ended and he was boozily waiting to be rotated back to the States.So that night he was on a lonely flight line, watching over a row of fighter planes. He didn't know why they needed watching.

I used to think the Supreme Court spent its time dealing with important matters.I used to think the justices were kept very busy with such things as abortion, the death penalty and civil rights.I used to think they labored under a tremendous workload. As one news account said this week: "The court, returning from its three-month summer recess with a blizzard of paperwork, issued orders in more than 1,400 cases."And you could just close your eyes and see the black-robed justices, buried up to their necks in snowbanks of papers.

Pillow of Fort Meade, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C.* Pvt. Jonathan Jenkins, son of Carol A. Jenkins of Fort Meade, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C. The private is a 1988 graduate of Meade Senior High School.* Pvt. Jeffrey S. Bubb, son of Ellis L. Bubb Jr. of Linthicum Heights and Linda L. Harding of Pasadena, completed training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 1990 graduate of Andover Senior High School.

Kerner of Woodbine, has completed a course at Fort Devens, Mass. which taught him to operate international Morse code equipment.Seaman Kerner is a 1991 graduate of South Carroll High School, Sykesville.Airmen complete trainingAir National Guard Airmen Kristen L. McCoy, daughter of Joan Van Anken of Columbia and Herbert H. McCoy of Annapolis, and Christina M. Garrett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick S. Garrett of Ellicott City, have completed the six-week basic military training course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

The airman is a 1988 graduate of Old Mill Senior High School.* Airman Fernando Baden, son of James A. and Helen G. Baden of Severn, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He was a basic training honor graduate.* Army Reserve Pvt. Robert G. Jones, son of Barbara Wheeler of Glen Burnie, completed training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.* Airman Clifton M. Owns Jr., son of Cynthia L. Wilson of Annapolis, completed training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Three area residents have graduated from Air Force basic training atLackland Air Force Base, Texas. They are:* Airman Edward L. Johnson. The son of Edward L. and Sandy F. Johnson of Annapolis, the airman is a 1990 graduate of Annapolis Senior High School.* Airman 1st Class Cheryl L. Randall. She is the daughter of Audrey Tuskan of Severn.* Airman Willam R. Stamey Jr. He is the son of retired army Master Sgt. Willam R. Stamey of Glen Burnie, and PatsyR. Stamey of Vine Grove, Ky.During the six weeks of training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations.

Army Specialist Robert C. Bodnar has been named soldier of the month.He is an armor crew member in Berlin.The soldier is the son of Andrew R. and Angela T. Bodnar of Millersville.His wife, Mary, is the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Straub of Crofton.He graduated from Old Mill Senior High School in 1985 and Catonsville Community College in 1989.COMPLETE BASIC TRAININGSeveral area servicemen recently completed basic military training:* Army National Guard Pfc. Thomas L. Chapman, son of Susan L. Chapman of Severn, completed his training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Chapman is a 1990 graduate of Meade Senior High School.

Air National Guard Airman Brett S. Kowalewski graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Kowalewski completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Kowalewski is the son of Cathy and John Kowalewski of Jenny Road, Bel Air. He is a 2012 graduate of Fallston High School.
