John Harbaugh's decision to fire offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and promote quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell to that position was shocking in terms of the timing, but it wasn't unprecedented in the NFL this season. The Philadelphia Eagles dismissed defensive coordinator Juan Castillo two days after the team fell to 3-3, and the Tennessee Titans did the same with offensive coordinator Chris Palmer one day after that squad dropped to 4-7. Making a change at coordinator wasn't even unheard of among the Ravens.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Orioles and outfielder Nate McLouth, one of their key stretch run players from last year's playoff season, agreed to a one-year deal Wednesday, essentially shutting the door on acquiring more major league outfielders, including free agent Nick Swisher. Although it is pending the completion of a physical, the Orioles came to terms on a one-year, $2 million deal with McLouth, a 31-year-old outfielder who batted .268 with seven homers and 12 steals in 55 games for the Orioles in 2012.

When the Orioles grabbed 28-year-old infielder Alexi Casilla off waivers from the Minnesota Twins this offseason, the first thought was that it would be for one year, since Casilla was in his final year arbitration before free agency next winter. But now the Orioles can have the second baseman back in 2014 if they want. The sides avoided arbitration Friday when Casilla agreed to a one-year deal for 2013 that will pay him $1.7 million next season, an increase from the $1,382,500 he made in 2012.

As we saw this past season, it doesn't make sense to put too much stock in preseason baseball odds . (Unless you're actually planning on betting on them.) But looking at how those odds shift is one way to see how impactful the pending Jays-Marlins trade could be if approved. As Dan Connolly outlined this morning , the megadeal that would send Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and others to Toronto would make the Blue Jays a true force in the American League. And that's reflected in the Vegas sports books this afternoon.

Update 5:45 p.m. Media outlets are reporting that the race has been canceled. Do you agree with the decision? Earlier in the day when Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the race would go on he argued it would add a big economic boost to the city during a time it really needs it. But others argued that the city in its fragile state from storm Sandy couldn't handle thousands of visitors running through the streets. Rescheduling the race would be hard. The logistics of a marathon are daunting and New York's attracts people from around the world.

Baltimore-based Vertis Holdings Inc., at one time the largest U.S. producer of advertising inserts in newspapers, plans to sell itself to a Wisconsin printing company for $258.5 million through an auction in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Vertis filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware Wednesday. It also sought court approval to sell its assets to Quad/Graphics, which produces retail advertising inserts and direct marketing and in-store marketing campaigns. It is the third bankruptcy-law filing in five years for Vertis, which also sought the court's protection to reorganize its finances in 2008 and 2010.

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler has reached a settlement with California-based CleanWell Company and OhSo Clean Inc, the makers of a hand sanitizer that claimed it was "proven to kill 99.99 percent of germs that can make you sick. " Gansler's investigation revealed no actual proof that those statements were true. CleanWell must pay $100,000 in penalties and costs, and will no longer be allowed to assert that its hand sanitizer can prevent disease or infection. “Companies that make unsubstantiated claims about their products deceive consumers into spending their hard-earned money on something that may not live up to its billing,” Gansler said in a statement.

RG Steel is asking for U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval for a settlement with Maryland that lowers its Sparrows Point property assessment, reducing its Baltimore County bill for the past three tax years. The steel mill owner calculated in a court filing that its tax bill would fall about $830,000 for the 2011 tax year. It didn't note the effect for previous years. RG Steel said it won a $34 million reduction on the property's 2009 assessed value - to just under $204 million - in Maryland Tax Court in August.
