Fresh off becoming the first director since 1990 to helm a Best Picture winner without being nominated himself, Ben Affleck swore that's not a distinction he loses sleep over. "I'm not going to spend a lot of time second-guessing" the academy, he said, clutching the Oscar he'd just won as a producer for "Argo. " After all, he noted, academy voters did give him an Oscar, just not one for directing. Still, the normally self-effacing Affleck promised, people might see some changes in him, now that he's a two-time Oscar winner (he'd previously shared a screenwriting award with pal Matt Damon for "Good Will Hunting")

I pay no more attention to the Academy Awards than to the Miss America pageant and other reality shows, but the heavy-breathing coverage of the Academy Awards sometimes sparks a faint interest. This from Slate : Now that Ben Affleck's Iran hostage drama Argo has garnered seven Oscar nominations to add to its mantle, upon which already sit $110 million in domestic box office, near unanimous acclaim from critics, and even a whisper campaign for Affleck to run for John Kerry's soon-to-be vacated Senate seat, it needs to be said: Argo is a fraud.

WASHINGTON - The biggest show in town yesterday was at the White House. But since the public couldn't get in to see the president and vice president meet with the 9/11 commission, Hollywood offered up a pretty good alternative. Actor Ben Affleck was in town. And he is, as several people commented, just as good-looking in person. He wore a dark suit, a blue shirt and gray monochrome tie, and strode into an ornate chamber located just off the Senate floor a mere five minutes late. The gilded room was crammed with reporters and congressional staffers; every seat was taken, and the walls were lined several people deep.

There are a lot of reasons to approach the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romance Gigli with trepidation when it opens tomorrow. Initial preview screenings elicited disastrous responses from test audiences. The studio took note, recalled the cast, shot another ending and tested the movie again. Apparently that screening didn't go so well, since director Martin Brest and Revolution Studios head Joe Roth left the theater screaming at each other and had to be separated. "See, we did it your way, we did your Hollywood ending and people hated it!"

How do you make a melodrama about two men who don't know who they are? Get other characters to shout out who they are or should be every seven minutes or so. That's what the makers of Changing Lanes have done, and according to advance reviews, they might just get away with it. Changing Lanes tries to develop a moral fable from a grudge match. Even before these strangers collide on New York's FDR Drive, they're running on empty. Lawyer Ben Affleck is racing to appear at a dicey multimillion-dollar probate case.

With her straggly blond hair - a few months late on a dye job - and messy makeup, Helene McCready is a tornado of hurt and mistrust in Gone Baby Gone, Ben Affleck's directing debut opening today. The world has given her a raw deal that's only gotten worse with the kidnapping of her 4-year-old daughter. But she's also a street-smart grifter, whose tears you're never sure are real. Helene was just the sort of character Amy Ryan wanted to portray. "I felt like I can do this," says Ryan, recalling her emotions upon reading the script written by Affleck and Aaron Stockard based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the novel Mystic River.

Sculptor Toby Mendez, the man whose bronze statues immortalized Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr. and four other Orioles greats in Camden Yards ceremonies spread over the past six months, has certainly enjoyed his time in the spotlight. But now it's his dad's turn. The exploits of the elder Mendez, Tony, are at the center of the movie “Argo,” about a daring CIA-Canada rescue mission that got six Americans out of Iran during the 1979-1981 hostage crisis by convincing authorities they were part of a Canadian film crew.

With Gone Baby Gone, Ben Affleck has taken a best-selling Dennis Lehane novel and made a compelling, sometimes terrifying, and, on occasion, bleakly funny urban mystery about failure. His private-eye hero, Patrick Kenzie (Affleck's younger brother Casey), struggles to crack the kidnapping of a 4-year-old girl named Amanda McCready from the rough Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. His quest exacts a cost in emotion and moral certainty each step of the way. With every advance in his investigation, Kenzie faces some shortcoming or breakdown in individuals and organizations.

The ring -- what about that 6.1-carat Harry Winston pink diamond engagement ring? To heck with the questions of who will pay the caterer, the florist and the musicians for J.Lo's canceled nups with Ben Affleck. Points of etiquette relating to a wedding on the rocks are myriad. But the burning question, if the Bennifer breakup is for good (and who knows, right?), centers on the $1.2 million bauble, a symbol of Affleck's one-time passion. Richard Alderman, who writes "The People's Lawyer" column, advises that an engagement ring is "a conditional gift."

Ben Affleck needs to find a new line of work. Nothing against the guy. He has served his term as movie star in an exemplary fashion. He drank to excess, gambled obscene piles of money and was photographed way too much. He said foolish things to the wrong people, lavished cocktail waitresses with extravagant tips and dated Jennifer Lopez. What more could anyone ask of a movie star, except perhaps a short jail term? The problem with Affleck, it seems, is in his ability to make the right decisions when it comes to the movie roles he chooses.
