BERLIN - Somali pirates firing automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades hijacked yet another ship in the Gulf of Aden yesterday, this time seizing a chemical tanker. A German military helicopter from a nearby warship arrived in time to pull three security guards out of the water, but not soon enough to prevent the hijacking of the ship and the rest of the crew. The latest attack, in which even trained security personnel aboard could not deter the pirates, demonstrated the urgent need for coordinated action by governments from Cairo to Berlin.

On a day he described as "not too hot, calm seas," Navy Cmdr. Stephen F. Murphy surveyed the sparkling water ahead of his ship, the guided missile destroyer USS Mahan, as it embarked on aggressive anti-pirate operations launched this week by the U.S. Navy. Murphy, a Catonsville native and Naval Academy graduate, is patrolling the Gulf of Aden, a million square miles of water squeezed between the coast of Somalia and the Arabian Peninsula. Each year 26,000 merchant ships and oil tankers traverse this vital sea lane of global commerce.

WASHINGTON - A Pentagon intelligence analyst on terrorism in the Persian Gulf resigned one day after the deadly attack on the USS Cole, charging that he warned in June of possible "major" terrorist acts but his superiors failed to pass on the warnings to military commanders, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee said yesterday. The name of the analyst, who worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency's Office of Counter-Terrorism Analysis, was not disclosed. A spokesman for the DIA confirmed that a midlevel analyst resigned shortly after the Cole was attacked at the Yemeni port of Aden but denied that the agency had suppressed any information about the Cole, Aden or Yemen.

CAIRO, Egypt - Ten men, including suspects in the bombing of the USS Cole, escaped from a high-security Yemeni prison yesterday, officials said. One of the missing suspects was Jamal al-Badawi, who is believed to have procured the small boat that was loaded with explosives and driven into the ship as it was refueling off the southern Yemeni port of Aden in October 2000. Seventeen American sailors were killed and 38 others were injured in the suicide bombing, which caused a 40-foot-by-60-foot hole in the ship.

Add Bruce Beresford to those directors who like to do things differently from their previous films.Beresford moves miles away from ''Driving Miss Daisy'' in ''Black Robe,'' a consistently engrossing, softly stated (save for a few frames here and there) film that combines adventure with spirituality. The movie, based on a book by Brian Moore, takes place in 1634 when a young priest and his companion leave France for Quebec. They hope to take Christianity to the Huron Indians, to convince the Hurons that the Christian version of paradise is better than theirs.
