ADELPHI -- Moments after New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton took the podium at a Maryland Democratic Party fundraiser last night, she made a very clear political promise about the state's future - before being interrupted with a question about her own. "You're going to have a new governor and lieutenant governor," she said to a crowd of about 250 attending the event in Adelphi. "You're going to have a new senator." Then a woman yelled from the audience: "We're going to have a new president, too."

ADELPHI - On a recent morning, 3-year-old Jennifer Medina could be seen in her classroom singing songs and learning skills aimed at readying her for kindergarten. Her mother, Daisy Medina, 29, of College Park, was upstairs in a classroom of her own, learning skills aimed at readying her for the GED exam. The scene, where parent and child attend school side by side, is common at the Judy Hoyer Family Learning Center in Adelphi, part of a statewide network that just marked its fifth year since being signed into state law. Each "Judy Center" is a one-stop shop for services including adult education, Head Start programs and health support, intended to help low-income and disadvantaged families prepare for their children's entrance into school.

It has become one of the recurring story lines in higher education, as inevitable as the professor-student affair: A president at an upwardly mobile university comes under fire for excessive spending of college funds on his house or travel, or other luxuries. This time it's American University, the 11,000-student private college in Northwest Washington. President Benjamin Ladner is under scrutiny for spending about $600,000 in university funds on, among other things, a car and driver for his wife's errands, trips to Europe for his personal chef, and extravagant parties for his family, according to a university investigation.

It is one of the great curiosities of Maryland higher education, right up there with that extra "s" in Johns Hopkins: Just where, exactly, is Adelphi? Adelphi is the impressive-sounding address of the University System of Maryland, invoking all the wisdom and authority of a Greek oracle. Administrators and faculty at 11 campuses refer to orders from "Adelphi" the way State Department staff speak of "Foggy Bottom" or the CIA refers to "Langley." As it turns out, though, the Adelphi address is somewhat of a fraud, if a well-intentioned one. And its invention is a telling tale of the emphasis that higher education often places on perception over reality.
