For the first half and a minute more, it looked as if the Blast would have another easy time manhandling Norfolk on Friday night. Instead, the expansion SharX showed just enough gumption in the third quarter to make things interesting. It proved a temporary obstacle for the Blast , however, as they came away with an 18-10 win in front of an announced crowd of 5,764 at 1 s t Mariner Arena. "It was a battle," Mike Lookingland said. "We came out and looked really good with a really good first quarter and then started to work a little bit more, make it a little more difficult and scored a couple goals.

With seven new players on a Blast roster that is now dominated by youth, it's understandable that the team may need some time to come together this Major Indoor Soccer League season. But not scoring a goal in its season home opener until the fourth quarter? By the time Max Ferdinand scored the Blast's first goal with 13:04 left to play on Saturday night, the home team had surrendered 13 points to the expansion Syracuse Silver Knights, who went on for a stunningly comfortable 18-7 win in front of an announced crowd of 8,087 at 1st Mariner Arena . Syracuse midfielder Andre Berenzon was the Blast's primary pest, scoring one two-point goal, one three-pointer and adding two assists to finish with seven points.

The Blast scored in bunches on Friday night and there were far too many for the Rochester Lancers to keep up. The biggest splurge came early in the third quarter - four goals in less than five minutes - and it gave the Blast plenty of cushion on its way to a comfortable 20-9 win over the Lancers in front of an announced crowd of 4,157 at 1st Mariner Arena . Forward Lucio Gonzaga led the way with two goals and two assists for the Blast, while...

Good teams find ways to win against a lesser opponent even when they may not be on top of their game. So the Blast, which came into Friday's game against last-place Wichita undefeated and averaging more than 15-plus points per game, had that task when its usually precise offense was mostly absent. Two goals a minute apart at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth proved the answer as the Blast shook the pesky, defensive-minded Wings, 10-6, in front of an announced 6,624 at 1st Mariner Arena .
