Firefighters and medical crews were dispatched from Carroll, Frederick, Washington and Baltimore counties yesterday to relieve weary Pennsylvania volunteers battling a 100-acre mountain blaze in Adams County, about five miles northeast of Emmitsburg, authorities said.Pennsylvania fire officials said 250 firefighters and about 50 civilians worked throughout Sunday night to contain the flames spread by extremely dry conditions and light winds."We just had to get help from Maryland to relieve our personnel," a spokeswoman for Adams County said.

Metzler's Garden Center and Christmas Shop will have a grand opening celebration from 8: 30 a.m. to 7: 30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday in its newly renovated quarters in Winfield.The family-owned and operated garden center includes 10,000 square feet of greenhouses, a full-service florist and a 3,000-square-foot Christmas shop.The Metzler family, John and Dotty and children Hans Metzler and Katrina Bellofatto, have owned a center in Howard County for the past 30 years. The center is on the site of the former Rolling Hills Farm and Garden Center at 935 W. Liberty Road.

Then it happens: a sudden blow against his neck, paralysis. He is falling, raising his left hand, feeling blood flowing from his neck and struggling to his knees and whispering "Medic."A man pretending to be a Union soldier calls out: "Bang, you're dead."

Pennsylvania authorities have charged a 52-year-old resident of France in the wounding of a Virginia re-enactor Friday during the 135th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.Authorities in Adams County filed charges of simple assault and reckless endangerment against Christian Evo, of Muret, France, after an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.Clinton Wakefield Epps, 22, of Charlottesville, was shot in the neck with a Civil War-era revolver or replica while playing the part of a Confederate infantryman with the 7th Virginia Regiment.
