James Howard VanMetre's first chance at parole from a Pennsylvania prison will be delayed at least two years, after a judge increased his sentence for a 1991 rape and kidnapping.Adams County, Pa., Common Pleas Judge John D. Kuhn changed VanMetre's sentence Wednesday from 13-26 years to 15 1/2 -35 years after determining the earlier sentence was illegal, court officials said.Under the previous sentence, VanMetre, 37, of East Berlin, Pa., would have been eligible for parole in 10 years. Under the revised sentence, he first will be considered for parole in 12 years.

During the 2004-2005 season, 4,932 white-tailed deer were killed in Carroll County, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Of these, 2,014 had antlers and 2,918 were antlerless. Washington County led the state with 10,149 deer taken by hunters, and Frederick County was in second place with 7,492, the department reported. The numbers for other Maryland counties adjacent to Carroll are: Baltimore County, 5,663; and Howard County, 2,858. In Adams County, Pa., 4,741 deer were killed in the 2002 season, and in York County, Pa., 11,564 deer were killed in 2002, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Two companies from northwest Carroll County helped firefighters from Adams County, Pa., battle a barn fire yesterday afternoon in Mount Joy Township, about a half mile north of the Pennsylvania line.Firefighters from Harney and Taneytown assisted Kingsdale and Littlestown of Adams County, but firefighters could not save the wooden barn or its contents. They had to stand by and let it burn, before spraying down the smoldering remains. The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m."What can you do but stand here and watch it burn?"

TANEYTOWN - Yvonne Small won't spend this Saturday night like she spent last night.Yesterday, the Baltimore Street resident celebrated her son Joe's wedding in Pittsburgh.First thing tomorrow morning, she'll be in jail.That is the decision of Adams County, Pa., Court of Common Pleas Judge Oscar F. Spicer, who sentenced Small on Thursday to serve six to 12 months in jail for trespassing at a top-secret military installation during a peace vigil last Aug. 8. Spicer gave her a furlough until tomorrow so she could attend the wedding.

Maryland State Police in Westminster are offering a reward of up to $250 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of vandals who stole or destroyed dozens of mailboxes early Sunday in Carroll and Frederick counties, and in Adams County, Pa.Police said the vandals drove through between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in a pickup truck.Much of the damage in Carroll County occurred in and around Taneytown, Harney and Mayberry, and along Route 97 between Westminster and Littlestown, Pa. Damage in Frederick County occurred along Bullfrog, Bargis, Bollinger School and Fish Hatchery roads.

Pa. extradition expected for suspect in 1991 killingJames Howard VanMetre, who is in a Pennsylvania prison awaiting sentencing for rape and kidnapping convictions, could be extradited to Carroll County as early as today to face first-degree murder charges in the 1991 death of a woman whose body was found in Harney.VanMetre, 35, waived his right to an extradition hearing in Gettysburg, Pa., on Friday, clearing the way for his return to Maryland. He is being held at the State Correctional Institute at Camp Hill, near Harrisburg.
