It is amusing and ironic that pop singer Adam Levine should be talking about "the decay of Western civilization" (Celebrities, Dec. 4). He is himself an icon of what journalist Carl Bernstein once described as "the idiot culture. " For the first time in our history, the weird, the stupid and the coarse are becoming not just the norm but our cultural ideal. Thomas F. McDonough, Towson

Why you should be watching'The Voice' We'd rather not think about the Super Bowl. But after the Vince Lombardi Trophy is presented to Sunday's winner comes a championship contest we can really get behind: the premiere of the second season of "The Voice" on NBC. A different kind of talent takes the field as singers compete for a recording contract, a $100,000 prize and a definite article. All have impressive voices - but who has "the" voice? The reality show had a knock-out first season last spring, raking in eight million to 14 million viewers an episode over its 10-week run. The success prompted a second season, with NBC debuting the show in the post-Super Bowl time slot.

In the midst of the California heat wave, last night's episode of 'The Voice' was all about hot performances…literally. The fate of the competitors was left in the hands of the viewers, while the fate of the live audience, coaches and performers, all left with no a/c, rested in the hands of the people who spent the beginning of the live show fixing it. It made for good TV, as we watched last night to see who would bring the heat, and if the power...

After a long and intense three weeks of blind auditions, all four coaches have filled their teams. During last night's episode, each coach got straight to the point when picking the final member of their team. In this final round, there was much disappointment from both the coaches and those unlucky few who didn't' make a team. No one seemed more upset than Carson Daly when his longtime idol Mark Lennon didn't get picked. Team Blake was the first team to come together, as Blake chose dancer-turned-Warped Tour performer Jaqui Sandell.

"The Voice" was feeling a little bit country as night two of the live play-off rounds began. It was time for Team Blake and Team Shakira to take the stage, and win the hearts of viewers. Blake 101: Have Fun! Coach Blake Shelton wanted to make sure his team showcased their personalities. What better way to do that, than an evening of karaoke? Blake's untraditional coaching tactic showed that there was indeed a method to his madness, as team Blake kicked off the show with a performance of Little Big Town's “Boondocks.” Team Shakira: Garrett Gardner, “Imagine” John Lennon “This is a big song, that's going to showcase his big talent.” Team Shakira's first contestant was The Voice's comeback kid, Garrett Gardner.

Spots are getting scant on the teams of NBC's "The Voice" so the coaches are getting pickier and pickier (and sassier and sassier) and competition's getting fierce. But for the contestants, it's still all about singing and dreams. Michelle Brooks-Thompson, 28, from Massachusetts with "Proud Mary" by CCR A football-hopeful husband with dashed dreams created a kind of parallel for Michelle, and the last thing she wanted was for both of their dreams to be crushed. But Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green both turned their chairs before the tempo shift even kicked.

Teams are nearly half-full on NBC's "The Voice," which can only mean there's at least a solid week left of blind auditions. Good thing the blinds are so fun, but that doesn't mean there's not a healthy dose of heartbreak thrown in. Collin McLoughlin, 24, from Bedford, N.Y., with Cat Stevens' "Wild World" This N.Y.U. drop-out was charming, mellow, and beautifully handled this oldie-but-goodie. Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine all turned for his "laser-y sharp" pitch, in Adam's words, and Collin went with Adam.

Remember all that voting you did this week? I'm not talking about the election; I'm talking about “The Voice.” Well, we got to see the results tonight, and I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in you, America. A results show means a lot of filler, but I'm gonna cut straight to the chase here because I'm angry. The deal was this, America: You got to save two people on each team, while Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton got to save one. Team Adam Saved by America: Amanda Brown and Bryan Keith Saved by Adam: Melanie Martinez Eliminated: Loren Allred, Joselyn Rivera In this case, it's Adam I'm mad at - you're good for now, America.
