Linda Kennedy, a staff attorney for the Homeless Persons Representation Project who previously worked as an advocate for children with disabilities, died of breast cancer Thursday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Hampden resident was 43. Born in White Plains, N.Y., and raised there and in Scottsdale, Ariz., Ms. Kennedy moved to Rodgers Forge in 1973 with her mother, Lenna Davis Kennedy. Her father, Stanton R. Kennedy, died in 1971. Ms. Kennedy's concern for others began early.

He has used a chain saw to carve intricate wooden sculptures for years, but when Mark Acton won a commission to hew two big new statues by the reservoir in Druid Hill Park, he wasn't sure he could pull it off. His material would be two tree stumps, each more than 12 feet tall and 20 feet around. Both were red oaks, which have especially tough wood. And when he first inspected them, he saw that each had lots of termite damage - the reason the city had cut them down. "'I thought, 'What in the world have I gotten myself into?

A San Francisco-based communications company announced Friday that it is purchasing the North Arundel Cable Television franchise for $76 million.zTC The sale should not affect the name, staff or operation of North Arundel CATV or its 44,000 customers, said Alan Mutter ofIntermedia Partners III L.P.If the sale, by Acton Corp. of Raleigh, N.C., is completed, Intermedia would become the 20th-largest cable system in the United States, Mr. Mutter said. The sale would bring its total number of subscribers to 610,000.

A brazen con artist received the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison yesterday for the 2006 murder of her boyfriend, after adding another bizarre chapter to a life of crime with a court appearance that included a last-ditch attempt to take back her guilty plea. Cynthia J. McKay, a 52-year-old mother of six, said a prison "epiphany" had convinced her to try to fight the charges - even though her son's release from jail was tied to her following through with her plea. When the judge turned down the request for a trial, McKay then said that she had stabbed her boyfriend during a fight.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Karns, a retired Baltimore obstetrician and gynecologist, died Friday of a stroke at her home in Salem, N.J. She was 93. Elizabeth Acton, the daughter of an insurance executive and a homemaker, was born and raised in Salem, N.J. After graduating in 1935 from Centenary Collegiate Institute in Hackettstown, N.J., she earned her bachelor's from American University in Washington in 1939. Dr. Karns earned her medical degree in 1943 from the University of Maryland Medical School, where she completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology.
