Hamilton College opened a five-goal lead in the second half, and the Continentals held on for an 11-10 win against previously unbeaten Salisbury in an NCAA Division III women's tournament semifinal in Salem, Va., yesterday. Hamilton (20-1) will face Franklin & Marshall for the title today. Franklin & Marshall (19-1) beat The College of New Jersey, 14-12, yesterday. Robyn Bishop led the Sea Gulls with four goals and an assist. Sue Ackermann and Kim Cudmore each added two goals. Seven different players scored goals for Hamilton.

Stephanie Walker and Suzanne Eyler scored two goals each as top-ranked Loyola remained undefeated with a 9-4 win over No. 15 Stanford in a nonconference game yesterday. Loyola (13-0) held a 2-1 lead 18 minutes into the game, before scoring seven of the next eight goals to put away the Cardinal (10-3) in Stanford, Calif. Washington College 17, Dickinson 0: Casey Sawma scored five goals and Minta Sayres added four as the Shorewomen (11-3, 6-2) posted their second shutout of the season, blanking the visiting Red Devils (2-8, 1-5)

With coach Cathy Reese back on the sideline after delivering her third child Wednesday, the No. 2 Maryland women overwhelmed No. 12 Dartmouth, 17-8, yesterday in College Park. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden recorded a career-high seven points, and senior Dana Dobbie had a goal and two assists. Maryland (6-1) took control early, scoring nine unanswered goals in the first 13:51 against Dartmouth (3-2). Navy 12, Holy Cross 11 -- Freshman defender Caitlin Mandrin Hill's goal with 2:57 left gave the host Midshipmen (6-0, 1-0 Patriot League)

Junior midfielder Steve Berger scored five goals and added two assists and junior goalie Richard Yost made 19 saves for the second consecutive game as Washington College, ranked fifth in Division III, routed 11th-ranked Gettysburg, 11-2, in the Centennial Conference championship game yesterday at Kibler Field in Chestertown. It was the 12th straight win for the Shoremen (12-2), who won their first league title since 1997 and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Washington raced to a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter against the five-time defending conference champion Bullets (11-5)

Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown plans to sell its short-term municipal finance business, a move precipitated by the $9 billion merger last month that joined Bankers Trust and Germany's Deutsche Bank AG.A spokeswoman for Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown said yesterday that the business did not fit well with the German company's other operations. "It's a relatively small business," said the spokeswoman, adding that the move would affect about 15 jobs -- mostly in New York.The spokeswoman also said Deutsche Bank is in discussions to sell the business and no date has been set for shutting it down.

Bankers Trust Corp. and Deutsche Bank AG's board of directors approved a $9.5 billion takeover of the country's eighth-largest banking company, according to sources.The boards of Bankers Trust, the parent of Baltimore-based BT Alex. Brown Inc., and Deutsche Bank voted yesterday in separate meetings to approve the deal worth $93 a share after weeks of rampant speculation that a transaction was imminent.Bankers Trust's board met at the New York law offices of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, where directors unanimously approved the deal, while Deutsche Bank's board met separately in Germany.

GIRLS PLAYERS OF THE YEAR Kelly Kasper and Lauren Schwarzmann Century These exceptionally talented senior midfielders were the driving force behind Century's run to the Class 2A-1A state title, and certainly will go down as one of the most potent offensive duos in state history. Kasper, who will continue her career at Maryland, finished the season with 72 goals and 41 assists, threatening Liberty's Becky Trumbo (Towson University) on the all-time Carroll County scoring list. She used her exceptional speed, athleticism and pinpoint shooting accuracy to earn a share of her second straight county Player of the Year honor.

Player of the Year Becky Trumbo, Liberty: A repeat first-team attacker, Trumbo led the No. 8-ranked Lions in nearly every offensive category. She had 100 points -- 68 goals and 32 assists. She also shot 54 percent. Her biggest burst came with seven goals in a win over South Carroll that gave the Lions sole possession of first place in Carroll County, a position they would never relinquish. Trumbo also scored five goals on several occasions including the 17-10 regional final loss to No. 1 Mount Hebron.

With their friend and teammate still at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center following a serious car accident Thursday night, players on the Westminster girls lacrosse team took heavy hearts into their game last night against county power Liberty. Team members used athletic tape to form Carrie Serio's No. 18 on the fronts of their kilts and observed a moment of silence before the opening draw. The Owls were dominated by the host No. 4 Lions, 25-3, but the score seemed to matter little. "I think it brings the reality of life to a bunch of carefree 17-year-olds," Westminster coach Suzanne Peters said.

Fourth-ranked Virginia held seventh-ranked Duke to two goals in the second half yesterday and won the Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse championship, 17-7, over the Blue Devils in Chapel Hill, N.C. Duke (11-5) took an early 3-1 lead, But the Cavaliers (15-3) scored the next seven goals, including three by Ashleigh Haas. Haas capped the run by scoring on a free-position shot with 4:33 remaining in the first half. The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 8-4 23 seconds later, but Amy Appelt scored the first of her five goals with 3:44 to play in the half and Caitlin Banks added another to make it 10-4.
