County housing fair scheduled for Saturday Anne Arundel County will hold Housing Fair 2004 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in celebration of Homeownership Month. The event will take place at the Chesapeake Arts Center, 194 Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park. Featured will be exhibits, presentations and general information about various housing and homeownership improvement programs and opportunities available to county residents. Attendees can talk with housing counselors, lenders and real estate agents about their services.

For decades, Ethelda "Miss Peggy" Kimbo was a beloved Annapolitan who befriended midshipmen and charmed diners at the old Little Campus Inn. Her legacy will be commemorated in Annapolis on Saturday, when a stretch of Maryland Avenue will be designated as "Peggy Kimbo Way. " Kimbo grew up in the area and worked at the Little Campus Inn, now Galway Bay. The kitchen at Galway Bay still serves "Miss Peggy's crab cakes," which the restaurant says...

The Westminster Common Council has awarded an $88,046 contract to a Howard County company to renovate a city maintenance shop on Old Manchester Road.Baltimore-Washington Restoration Co. Inc. will do exterior work on the 2 1/2 -story building, which was used for several years to store road salt. Construction is expected to begin next month and take about four months to complete."The company will be installing three roll-up doors, fixing some windows and closing others," said Thomas B. Beyard, city director of planning and public works.

The Vice Admiral Elliot Bryant and Miriam Bryant Distinguished Artist Series has brought performers of international stature to the Naval Academy in Annapolis for seven years, and this year's series is no exception.Russia's St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, which has attracted high-quality talent since its inception, opens the series Nov. 12 on the Alumni Hall stage.hTC Conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Kiril Kondrashin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Simon Rattle have taken the podium with the orchestra since its founding in 1967, and soloists of the magnitude of pianist Murray Perahia and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich have dotted the ranks of its collaborating artists.

75 years ago An eagle measuring 6 feet 6 inches from tip to tip was shot and killed yesterday at "Wild Rose Lodge" on South River. For days, it had been swooping down and killing chickens and ducks on the Mrs. John Waggaman farm. -- The Sun, Oct. 5, 1920.Seven Sunday School classes have been organized at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. One of Germany's most distinguished orchestras, the Bamberg Symphony, appears at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17, at the new Bob Hope Performing Arts Center, in Alumni Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.The program will include Dvorak's "Carnival" Overture and "New World" Symphony and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, with soloist Heinrich Schiff performing on his 1698 Stradivarius cello.Founded 45 years ago by refugee musicians from Prague, the orchestra will be conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.

Paul E. Hedemann, a sea captain who worked for Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 35 years, died New Year's Eve of heart and kidney failure at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. He was 75.Born in 1916 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the eldest of 10 brothers and two sisters, Mr. Hedemann arrived in Baltimore at age 16, alone and speaking little English.By World War II, he was teaching navigation to Scandinavians at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. He also served as a navigator during the war.He continued to sail for Bethlehem Steel and rose to become district manager of the Gulf Coast of the United States in the marine division of the company.
