Two Edgewood High School students, described as scholastic leaders, were killed and three of their fellow students on the school's competitive academic team were injured in a car crash last night in Abingdon. They were on their way to a school board meeting to receive academic honors.On Feb. 14, two other Edgewood High School students were killed when their car went out of control on a curve near Churchville and crashed into a pole."It's very somber, very quiet in this school today," said principal Robert C. Williams.

While the debates continue about academic requirements for high school and college athletes, the 24 student-athletes we feature today have no problem meeting the regulations.The ninth annual Anne Arundel County Sun All-County Academic Athletic Team consists of 12 boys and 12 girls who go beyond the requirements and shine as model student-athletes.We narrowed down almost 100 applications to come up with the top 24 in the county, and these are truly outstanding young people.Wewere looking for well-rounded student-athletes who compile a high grade-point average while playing more than one varsity sport, get involved in school and community, prepare a neat resume as if applying for a job, have recommendation letters that reveal character and attitude, write a good essay and show some creativity.

Matt Roe has become the first Maryland player to make the GTE Academic All-America first team since Tom McMillen did it three straight seasons, ending in 1974. Roe was named to the university division first team, and Johns Hopkins guard Andy Enfield was named to the college division first team.Roe, who transferred to Maryland after three years at Syracuse, averaged 17.8 points as a shooting guard for the Terps this season. He has a 3.5 grade-point average as a radio-television-film major.

A whole bunch of "Q's & A's" are coming right up, sports fans, but first let me answer a few questions that have been coming into the 24-Hour Sportsline (647-2499) about the ninth annual Anne Arundel CountySun All-County Academic-Athletic Team.Let me give you an idea ofwhat we are looking in the top 12 boys and top 12 girls who excel inacademics and athletics.Applications must include the official ballot, which will run frequently on these pages until the March 15 entry deadline.Applicants must play at least one varsity sport and the team is open to all high school students residing in the county.
