THE FIRST BLOOD of the Civil War was shed not on some great battlefield, but on our own Pratt Street, hard by today's Harborplace. On April 19, 1861, a week after bombardment of Fort Sumter, S, C. (where there were no battle casualties), soldiers of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment were passing, through Baltimore on their way to Washington to answer President Lincoln's call for troops to defend the capital. The P.W. & B. rail line, from the north, ended at the President Street Station, near Little Italy.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Nsilo Abraham's layup with 1:02 remaining lifted Loyola to a 64-63 victory over St. Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game last night. The Greyhounds (6-9, 3-2) have won five of their past seven games.Loyola forward Anthony Smith (team-high 17 points) stole the ball from Randy Holmes with 1:19 left and the Greyhounds trailing 63-62. He then fed Abraham for the game-winning basket.The Peacocks (10-5, 1-3) did not take another shot, committing two turnovers in the final minute.

Abraham Eagle, a chemist who taught thousands of people to swim through the Catonsville Recreation and Parks Council's Learn to Swim Program, died Thursday of heart failure at his Catonsville home. He was 75. Mr. Eagle was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1944. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from New York University and went on to work as a chemist, specializing in plastics. After working in New York for several years, he moved to Baltimore to work for National Plastics.

Abraham Bates, the son of fur traders in Mongolia who was inspired to a life as a human rights activist by witnessing the brutal Japanese invasion of China, died of cancer Thursday at his home in Howard County. He was 81.Mr. Bates, born Abraham Bihovsky, of Russian-Jewish ancestry, was studying economics in China at the time of the 1937 invasion. He changed his name and became an accountant after moving to the United States the next year.Locally, he was assistant director of the Maryland Academy of Sciences from 1965 to 1974, and then director of finance for Planned Parenthood of Maryland until retiring in 1986.

Dr. Robert A. Abraham, a physician who directed Johns Hopkins Hospital's obstetrics anesthesia program and was a leader in childbirth safety, died of an apparent brain hemorrhage Feb. 3 at his Lutherville home. He was 79. Born in Mahanoy City, Pa., and raised in Reading, Pa., he earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Franklin & Marshall College and his medical degree from the University of Maryland. As part of his duties as a resident at what is now University of Maryland Medical Center, he delivered babies in West Baltimore homes.
