After losing big to top-ranked Gilman last week, Archbishop Spalding had something to prove. And the Cavaliers did. Zach Abey rushed for one touchdown and threw for another to lead host Spalding (4-3) to a 29-11 upset victory over No. 9 Mount St. Joseph on Friday. "We needed to prove to ourselves that we belong" in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, coach Brian Propst said. "The team came together in the second quarter. And in the second half, we controlled the ball and the clock.

Wish You Were Here, by Stewart O'Nan. Grove/Atlantic. 528 pages. $25. The Maxwells, like most American families, seem on the brink of disaster. The family's annual ingathering of three generations at a lakeside cottage unfolds in the pages of Stewart O'Nan's new novel, though Henry, the paterfamilias, is absent. His death the prior winter has set in motion what little action is to be found in Wish You Were Here. So many plot devices are wheeled out and made ready that the very lack of exterior drama is something of a triumph.

The last two times St. Mary's football team played Archbishop Spalding, the Saints couldn't come close to their Anne Arundel County rival, but Saints coach Steve Erxleben predicted that Thursday night's game would not be a blowout. He was right, but the Cavaliers still came away with the victory, 34-20, in the 9/11 Patriot Classic at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Bryce Carrasco's 24-yard scoring run with 6:23 left in the game brought the Saints within 28-20, but Spalding's Christopher Zawitoski broke a 41-yard run on the Cavaliers' next drive to set up a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Weiman four plays later.

Calvert Hall's football team was pretty banged up after Monday's loss to Gilman and played without four starters in Friday night's regular-season finale at Archbishop Spalding, but the Cardinals only looked bruised for about eight minutes. The No. 2 Cardinals gave up an early touchdown to No. 10 Archbishop Spalding and then shut out the Cavaliers the rest of the way en route to a 27-7 victory that clinched the No. 2 seed in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs and a first-round bye. "After how well we played Monday against Gilman, we were fired up," Cardinals running back Stephen Kelly said of the 24-14 loss to the No. 1 Greyhounds in a game that had been postponed from Oct. 19 because of thunderstorms.

Unhappy with the way they played in the first half Saturday at McDonogh, the Archbishop Spalding football players bickered briefly at halftime. Then, they left it all behind and came out united to rally from 13 points down to beat the Eagles, 14-13, in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference opener for both teams. While the Eagles (1-4) held the Cavaliers' offense to just 23 yards in the first half, the Cavaliers (3-2) dominated possession in the second, especially in the final 18 minutes.
