Amber Milnes Aberdeen In her first season with the Eagles, Milnes faced a couple of daunting tasks -- rebuilding after graduating three starters from last year's state championship team and then rebuilding again after 2011-12 All-Metro Player of the Year Brionna Jones tore an anterior cruciate ligament in January, which forced her to miss the rest of the season. With two freshman and two sophomore starters, she converted a team that had been centered on the 6-foot-3 Jones into an up-tempo team in which everyone had to contribute.

Thursday's much-anticipated girls basketball rematch between Aberdeen and host Joppatowne turned out to be a lopsided 82-40 win for the visiting Eagles, who stayed unbeaten in the Chesapeake Division of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference. Aberdeen, 19-0, division champions at 10-0 and ranked No. 1, used its relentless full-court press to force the Mariners (16-4, 9-2) into numerous turnovers throughout the first half. The Eagles led 31-8 after one quarter, 45-21 at the half and 68-38 after three quarters.

Outstanding bowling this season at Harford Lanes on Custis Street in Aberdeen included a high three-game series for the ladies of 711 by Kim Haney and 707 by Stacy Reynolds. Series of over 800 have been bowled by Jason Barnard (813) and Alan Zero (807). Cecil-Harford Hall of Famer Andre Brown recently bowled the high set of the season of 834 which included a 300 game, which made an even dozen of the perfect games bowled this season at Harford Lanes. The other 300s were bowled by Curtis Testerman and Darryl Cremeen, the first ever for each; Kevin Burkins, his second, Eric Lucas bowled his third.

A 46-year-old Howard County woman intentionally stepped into traffic on northbound I-95 Thursday night and was struck and killed by a van. The accident shut down a segment of the highway near the Aberdeen interchange for about three hours. Shortly before 9 p.m., officers from the Maryland State Police barrack responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on the road and found the van stopped on the shoulder. The driver, who sustained minor injuries in the collision, told police a woman had stepped into the path of the car. Police found letters indicating the woman intended to commit suicide in another car abandoned on the shoulder of the highway.

ABERDEEN -- Groundbreaking for Aberdeen's minor-league stadium will be at 10 a.m. Monday on Gilbert Road near Interstate 95. Among those expected to attend are Orioles third-baseman Cal Ripken Jr., who is spearheading the project; his brother, Bill Ripken; Gov. Parris N. Glendening, and Harford County Executive James M. Harkins. In addition to a 5,000- to 6,000-seat stadium, the complex will include a Youth Baseball Academy, featuring six miniature versions of major-league ballparks. Minor-league baseball is expected to be played at the stadium beginning in 2001.

With five individual champions to four for host and No. 5 Aberdeen, unranked Chesapeake of Anne Arundel County dethroned the Eagles, 209.5-206.5, in Saturday's fifth annual Aberdeen Invitational wrestling tournament.The lead changed hands three times in the championship round before Chesapeake's 171-pound Shawn Somers (13-1, nine pins) decisioned Aberdeen's Charles Shannon, 7-0, and the Cougars' 189-pound Chuck McConnell (12-3, 10 pins) picked up his third first-period pin of the day over Aberdeen's Mike Grant.

No. 2 Aberdeen won its second straight Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference girls basketball championship Wednesday night in a rout, beating Edgewood, 62-23, at C.Milton Wright. Despite the lopsided final score, the Eagles (20-3) struggled early, missing free throws (3-for-9 in the first quarter and 5-for-21 in the first half) and layups. The Eagles' early problems enabled the undersized Rams to hang tough early. Edgewood (16-7) trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but Aberdeen freshman Stephanie Jones (23 points)

Graf, son of Pete and Sharlene Graf of Abingdon, has enlisted in the Maryland Air National Guard.He joined the 175th Services Flight at Warfield Air National Guard Base in Middle River.After attending basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Graf will attend a technical training school at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo.

Joe Gordon and Demont Blackman rushed for two touchdowns each, as eleventh-ranked and host Aberdeen routed Joppatowne, 33-0, in a Harford County League game.The Eagles (5-1, 3-1) ran at will against the Mariners' defense, previously the best in Harford County and have now outscored opponents, 133-0, over the last three games.Meanwhile, Joppatowne's offense never found its footing on the slick field. The Mariners (5-1, 3-1) had just 17 yards total offense and only three first downs."We came ready to play," said Aberdeen coach Macon Tucker.

Duane Brown was installed as pastor of Grove Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen.Brown comes to Aberdeen from West Middletown, Pa., where he was pastor of Grove Presbyterian Church for four years.He received a bachelor of science degree from West Virginia StateCollege and master of divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary,where he was recognized by awards in biblical studies and evangelism.Brown, 37, of Charlestown, W.Va., has served on the Music Ministries and Evangelism Committee of Washington Presbytery.
