It's Christmas Eve, and this year both CBS and ABC are offering televised religious services beginning at 11:35 p.m. Of the two, the NBC telecast has the biggest supporting cast and the best location: Its coverage of midnight Mass is live from St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, with Pope John Paul II. As for more secular offerings tonight, they include the following:* "The Harry Connick Jr. Christmas Special" (9-10 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- The title is refreshingly straightforward, and so,in a way, is this special.

THE BODYGUARDOriginal Soundtrack Album (Arista 18699)Whether or not she makes a credible actress, Whitney Houston remains a bankable singer, so it's no surprise that the soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" comes packed with pop potential. What does seem a shock is how few of the album's high points come from Houston. "I Will Always Love You" is a perfect (if predictable) bit of romantic treacle, and the slick, new jack sound of "Run to You" makes it her most believable R&B effort yet. But her "Jesus Loves Me" seems calculated when compared to Aaron Neville's angelic "Even If My Heart Would Break," and Houston's version of "I'm Every Woman," though a heartfelt Chaka Khan tribute, hardly compares to the funk revisionism of "It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day" by the S.O.U.

Tonight's TV schedule is as slow as molasses in . . . well, in December, anyway.* "Bob Hope's Bag Full of Christmas Memories" (8-10 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- Bob Hope, at 90, is a living legend, but one whose increasing frailty is making it trickier for him and NBC to mount his annual TV specials. This one solves the problem in two ways: by having Hope work from his San Fernando Valley home (no travel) and by having him present a lot of flashbacks (less demanding). Still, viewers will get the chance to see Bob and Dolores Hope singing together -- and, in what is a slightly more newsworthy duet, Naomi Judd singing again with her daughter Wynonna.

It would be easy for bassist Rob Wasserman to be intimidated by the popularity of his current touring partner, guitarist Bob Weir, who usually leads the Grateful Dead on stage. What with the thousands of Dead Heads who follow Weir and his band across the country, who wouldn't be?But while "there are a lot of Grateful Dead fans coming to the shows . . . I wouldn't say it's all his crowd," says Wasserman, 38, who plays the unique Clevenger six-string electric bass that stands 7 feet high. "We're a little more low-key than the Dead."
