On Sunday, January 27, The Baltimore Sun printed an article about Planned Parenthood that was, of course, pro-abortion in slant ("Safe, legal abortion for 40 years"). In all fairness, there should have been space devoted to a pro-life article as well, especially in light of the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But you chose to ignore the more than 600,000 people who Marched for Life on Friday, January 25. And the countless others who couldn't be at the march but were there in spirit, like myself.

December marked the 40th anniversary of Kwanzaa. Observed from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, Kwanzaa is an African-American cultural expression marked by a seven-day celebration of certain principles, including unity, self-determination, creative work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Maulana Karenga founded Kwanzaa, which is Swahili for "first fruits of the harvest," in 1966. While there were many Kwanzaa events in the area, we stopped at the Baltimore Museum of Art for family activities.

I read your article in The Sun entitled "Keep abortion safe and legal" (Jan. 27) by Jenny Black, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Maryland. I know that it was printed to acknowledge the 40th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. In the name of fairness, I am now respectfully requesting that you print a commentary from someone on the pro-life side of this issue. I would think more highly of your paper if you kept it fair and balanced, and if you presented both sides of a controversial issue such as abortion.

Plans are taking shape for an expansive celebration of Columbia's 40th anniversary this summer with 40 days of activities that will include a new three-day celebration at the Town Center lakefront. The Columbia 40th Birthday Celebration Task Force has hired consultants to organize a City Fair, which will be sponsored by the Columbia Association from June 29 through July 1, said Barbara L. Russell, a Columbia Association board member from Oakland Mills and chairwoman of the task force. After considering several candidates, the committee chose TPC: The Party Connoisseur, an event-planning company in Bowie, and Signature Space LLC, a project management company in Silver Spring, which submitted a joint proposal.

COLLEGE PARK -- Other than gaining confidence, experience, physical strength and more knowledge about their roles, there isn't much the Maryland defense can do to improve. After giving up 101 points in losses to Virginia and North Carolina, the Terps' defense ranks No. 106 and last in NCAA Division I-A in scoring defense (an average of 50.5 points allowed) and total defense (593.5 yards). The Terps are No. 103 in both rushing and passing defense, but coach Mark Duffner feels the situation will improve.

The Maryland Humanities Council will announce today a first-of-its-kind grant program to fund forums, seminars and other community events aimed at promoting racial dialogue and timed around next year's 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance and reconciliation are the twin goals of the statewide initiative on race, which is named for the slain civil rights leader, organizers said. The King initiative grants, which will total $500,000, will be used to stimulate community conversations through the arts and humanities, especially before memories of King's life work start to wane, said Peggy Burke, the council's executive director.

Ron Giddings, 25, describes himself as a jack of all trades and a glutton for punishment. This season, he has dedicated considerable time and talent to directing two Annapolis Summer Garden shows: the midseason offering Urinetown and the Broadway Under the Stars 40th Anniversary show opening Sept. 8. The event will raise funds for the restoration and renovation of Summer Garden's building and performance space. "I have had a blast shaping them and pulling new things from all these experienced performers," Giddings said of the cast, embracing the "choreographed chaos that makes a smooth and tight show for the audience and absolute madness for the actors.
