One month after the Olympic Gymnastics Trials at the Baltimore Arena, eight of America's top female gymnasts will square off one more time today in a final selection for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.The last cut will occur in Altamonte Springs, Fla. A final team of six Olympians and one alternate should emerge.Two gymnasts who didn't even appear at the trials still could earn places on the team: Michelle Campi, who broke her right elbow on the eve of the trials, and Betty Okino, who has been sidelined with stress fractures in her back for three months.

It's being billed as The Paddle Battle on the Savage River in Western Maryland.There will be clowns, mimes, bands and concessions. The more adventurous can even paddle a canoe or take a white-water raft ride down a river.But the main event, May 16-17, will be the 1992 U.S. Olympic team trials for white-water slalom racing.State officials presented their final plans for the Olympic trials yesterday. In a move that long had been rumored in women's basketball circles, the NBA's Board of Governors yesterday unanimously endorsed a plan to create a women's NBA that would open play in the summer of 1997.Though the league was vague on specifics, sources close to the project said the NBA is expecting to field eight league-owned teams with 12 players each that would play 25-30 games in NBA arenas during a period from mid-June to mid-August.Commissioner David Stern, who, as early as the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, spoke of the possibility of an NBA-sponsored women's professional league, said details would be announced in early July.

Another financial incentive will be dangled in front of world class swimmers such as Baltimore's Anita Nall as they train for world championships and the Olympics.U.S. Swimming, the sport's governing body, has approved the awarding of prize money to top American finishers at major international meets. There will be purses of $600,000 for the 1994 World Championships in Rome and $800,000 for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.Points will be awarded for medals -- three for gold, two for silver, one for bronze -- and the purse will be divided into shares.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Beaten by a former training partner yesterday, Norman Bellingham, of Bethesda, Md., will try to win another medal this morning in the K-2 flat-water canoe-kayak finals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.In yesterday's single kayak 500-meter final, Bellingham finished fourth. The gold went to Finland's Mikko Kolehmainen, who trained with Bellingham last winter.In this morning's two-man kayak 1,000-meter medal race, Bellingham and his partner, Greg Barton, will attempt to become the first team in Olympic history to successfully defend the gold TTC medal in the event.

Here's your chance to help host the United States Olympic Gymnastics Trials being held here from June 6 through June 13 at the Arena. It is a Baltimore first and 600 volunteers, age 18 and over, are needed.In seven days of trials, approximately 50 of the country's top male and female gymnasts will compete to determine the 14 gymnasts who will represent the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.A 16-member volunteer board is organizing the event with 150 volunteer workers at present plus 40 children who will act as runners, flashers and ceremony presenters.
