The Boston Red Sox acquired veteran pitcher Dan Petry from the Atlanta Braves yesterday for a minor-league player to be named.The right-hander was 0-0 with a 5.55 ERA with the Braves. He was traded to Atlanta on June 25 by the Detroit Tigers for shortstop Victor Rosario. With Detroit this season, he was 2-3 with a 4.94 ERA in 17 games, including six starts."Getting Petry gives us some experience in the bullpen," Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman said. "We feel Petry knows the league very well, and he should help shore up things there."

Angels: Pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro was hit in left eye in the ninth inning by a ball he fouled off the plate. He was on the ground for several minutes before leaving with the eye almost completely swollen shut. He was taken to Fairview University Hospital for X-rays. Anaheim is 4-13 in July.Devil Rays: Tampa Bay manager Larry Rothschild was ejected in the second by plate umpire Dave Phillips for arguing balls and strikes.Indians: Cleveland is 1-8 in 1998 and 6-14 overall against the Red Sox since winning the 1996 season series 11-1.
