Former Mount St. Joseph basketball standout Henry Sims has signed a 10-day contract with the New Orleans Hornets. Sims, who went undrafted after a four-year career at Georgetown, was playing in the NBA D-League for the Erie Bayhawks before signing with the Hornets. He averaged 17.1 points, 9 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots for the Bayhawks and was named to the D-League All-Star Game.  The Hornets lost center/forward Jason Smith for the season with a torn labrum, which prompted the signing for Sims.

Maryland's first-round National Invitation Tournament game against Iona on Friday at Comcast Center will be played at 7 p.m. Should the Terps advance, they would play the winner of the Drexel-East Carolina game. "We'll use the WNIT to allow us more practice and game time together to keep improving," Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. "Every day we play together is a chance to get better. We'll use this season away from the 'Big Dance' to fuel our returning and incoming players during the offseason and next year."

Allen Smith scored 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers during Arkansas-Pine Bluff's second-half surge to a 61-44 victory over Winthrop (19-14) in the NCAA tournament's opening game in Dayton, Ohio. The Golden Lions (18-15) will play Duke - the No. 1 seed in the West - on Friday in Jacksonville, Fla., a stunning development for a team that lost its first 11 games of the season - all on the road - before rallying to earn the Southwestern Athletic Conference title and its first NCAA tournament berth.

The Washington Mystics signed free agent Katie Smith , whom general manager Angela Taylor called "the LeBron James of this free-agency process" and "the Wilt Chamberlain or the Michael Jordan of the WNBA." Smith, 35, is the third-leading scorer in WNBA history and, when points from the American Basketball League are added in, the highest scorer in U.S. women's professional basketball. The 5-foot-11 guard helped the Detroit Shock win two WNBA championships and was the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 Finals.

Brooks Laich scored twice and five other Washington players had goals to lift the short-handed Capitals to a 7-3 win over the host Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. The Capitals were without star Alex Ovechkin , who was suspended for two games for a hit on Chicago's Brian Campbell . Ovechkin will also miss Thursday's game at Carolina. Nicklas Backstrom , Eric Fehr , Brendan Morrison , Jason Chimera and Alexander Semin each scored for the Capitals.

Smith scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Denver Nuggets pull away for a 97-87 victory Tuesday night over the visiting Washington Wizard, who lost their ninth straight game. Carmelo Anthony (Towson) led the Nuggets with 29 points and 12 rebounds. The game marked the return of Nuggets coach George Karl , who was back on the bench after missing four games over the past week for cancer treatments. The Washington Wizards signed guard Shaun Livingston to a 10-day contract Friday. The fourth overall pick in the 2004 draft played 10 games this season for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 1.0 points and 2.0 rebounds. Livingston was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers and has also played for the Miami Heat. The 24-year-old swingman's career has been marred by injuries. He has averaged 6.9 points and 4.4 assists in 167 career games.
