Maryland beat writers predict the outcome of Terps-Ohio State

October 03, 2014|By Matt Zenitz | Baltimore Sun Media Group

Each week during Big Ten play, the Washington Post’s Roman Stubbs, another Maryland football beat writer and I predict the outcome of the Terps' upcoming game.

Here are our predictions for Maryland's matchup with No. 20 Ohio State on Saturday in College Park. Kickoff is at noon, and the game will be broadcast on ABC.

This week's rotating writer is Daniel Popper from The Diamondback, Maryland's independent student paper.

Prediction: Ohio State 31, Maryland 20

Maryland has the talent to win this game. It will also be interesting to see if the Terps can make some plays against a relatively young Ohio State secondary that allowed 352 yards and four touchdowns to Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel last week. I just question if Maryland’s defense can slow down the Buckeyes’ offense enough to win the game.

The Terps’ defense was great against Indiana last week. But Ohio State redshirt quarterback J.T. Barrett is playing well. Sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott ran for 182 yards last week, and the Buckeyes have some playmakers at wide receiver.

This will also be a big challenge for Maryland’s offensive line, as it will face likely one of the more talented defensive fronts in the country.

The Terps have some advantages, and it would not surprise me whatsoever if Maryland won. However, the way Ohio State’s offense has come together in recent weeks combined with the Buckeyes’ talent in the front seven on defense are why I think Ohio State comes away with the win Saturday.

Prediction: Ohio State 37, Maryland 31

Regardless of who is playing quarterback, I think Maryland will be able to expose Ohio State's secondary and make enough big plays to be in position to win. But Ohio State's offense has been hot the past two weeks -- it racked up 45 first downs last week against Cincinnati -- and I think freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett continues to progress enough for the Buckeyes to pull out a win.

Prediction: Maryland 34, Ohio State 27

In front of the first sold-out crowd at Byrd Stadium in nearly six years, Randy Edsall earns his first victory over a ranked opponent as Terps coach. Whether it’s Caleb Rowe or C.J. Brown under center, wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Deon Long build off last week’s performances to torch a Buckeyes’ secondary that surrendered just fewer than 300 yards per game over its first four contests. Redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett once again fails to deliver in a hostile road environment while Terps linebacker Cole Farrand keys another stout performance from the run defense against Urban Meyer’s spread offense.
